English Translation for Hekayat

What can an old harlot do but continue in her wickedness, and what can a deposed sheriff do but continue in his cruelty?

A young recluse is a brave man on the path of God,

For an old man cannot rise from his corner.

A young man must strongly avoid lust,

For an old man with weak desires cannot even raise his instrument.

Saadi's wisdom here highlights the importance of self-discipline and the challenges of changing one's nature. It teaches us that while youth offers the strength to resist temptations, old age often lacks the vigor to change ingrained habits. Saadi's timeless insights continue to offer valuable lessons on the significance of self-control and the difficulties of altering one's character later in life.
