English Translation for Hekayat
A sage was asked: Among the many renowned trees created by God, none has been called 'free' except for the cypress, which bears no fruit. What is the wisdom in this?
The sage replied: Every tree has a specific fruit that appears at a certain time, making it fresh, and at other times it withers without it. The cypress is not like this; it is always beautiful. And this is the quality of the free.
Do not set your heart on what passes, for the Tigris will flow through Baghdad long after the caliph.
If you can, be generous like the palm tree,
And if you cannot, be free like the cypress.
متن حکایت
حکیمی را پرسیدند: چندین درخت نامور که خدای عز و جل آفریده است و برومند، هیچ یک را آزاد نخوانده‌اند مگر سرو را که ثمره‌ای ندارد، در این چه حکمت است؟
گفت: هر درختی را ثمره‌ای معین است که به وقتی معلوم به وجود آن تازه آید و گاهی به عدم آن پژمرده شود و سرو را هیچ از این نیست و همه وقتی خوش است و این است صفت آزادگان.
بر آنچه می‌گذرد دل منه که دجله بسی
پس از خلیفه بخواهد گذشت در بغداد
گرت ز دست برآید چو نخل باش کریم
ورت ز دست نیاید چو سرو باش آزاد
