The steadfast ones of the path of truth

Sat in seclusion for a while together

One of them began to gossip

To speak of an unfortunate person

Someone said, O friend of a troubled soul

Have you ever fought in a foreign land?

He said, behind my own four walls

I have never put my feet forward all my life

Thus spoke the dervish, true to his soul

I have never seen such a person, unfortunate

The disbeliever sits in peace from his struggle

While the Muslim suffers from the injustice of his tongue

How well said the madman of the marketplace

A story that he bit his lips before speaking

If I speak ill of people’s names

I will say nothing but my mother’s gossip

The wise know well

That the obedience is best when done as the mother teaches

A friend who is absent, O noble one

There are two things forbidden for his friends

One is that they consume his wealth unjustly

The other is that they speak ill of his name

Whoever dishonors the name of others

Do not expect good from him

For behind your back, he will say the same

As he said in front of others

Anyone wise in this world is before me

Who is absorbed in himself and oblivious to the world
