Section 20 - A Story on Enduring an Enemy for a Friend: Someone, like Saadi, had a simple heart.
A beloved was in the farthest part of Tabriz
Who was always awake and a night wanderer
One night he saw a thief with a noose
He twisted it and threw it over the roof edge
He alerted the people, and a commotion arose
Men from all sides rose with sticks
When the coward heard the people's voices
He saw no place to stay amidst danger
A warning came to him from that turmoil
He found escape in the moment of choice
The pious heart softened with mercy
As the poor thief was deprived in the night
He came through the darkness seeking a rise
He came forward on another path to welcome him
Oh friend, do not go; I am your acquaintance
In manliness, I am the dust at your feet
I have seen no one like you in manliness
For warriorhood exists in two forms and only these
One is to confront the enemy bravely
The second is to escape the battlefield with life
For both these traits, I am your servant
What name do I bear, for I am the servant of your name?
If it is your will by the command of generosity
I will lead to a place where I know the way
There is a small house with a tightly closed door
I do not believe that there, the Lord of the bed resides
We will place two stones one on top of the other
One to stand on the shoulder of the other
Build as much as your hand can grasp
It is better than to be left empty-handed
With encouragement, flattery, and art
He led him towards his own home
The gallant night-walker lowered his shoulder
Upon his shoulder rose the master of wisdom
With his turban, cloak, and clothing that he had
He placed it from above onto his lap
From there arose a commotion, that the thief
The reward, O youth, and aid and wages
He sought escape from the turmoil of the deceitful thief
Running, holding the cloak of the pious in his arms
The heart of the righteous believer became at ease
For the lost one’s wish was fulfilled
The wicked one, who showed no mercy to anyone
A good-hearted man forgave him
It is no wonder from the nature of the wise
That they do good out of generosity to the wicked
In the fortune of the righteous, the wicked live
And though they are not of the people of goodness
