Section 20 - A Tale: Someone praised Sa'd, the Zangi...

Someone praised Sa'd Zangi,

Wishing much mercy upon his grave.

He gave him money, honors, and kindness,

And accorded him a place according to his own stature.

When he saw the word 'Allah' in gold engraving,

He was stirred, and removed his garment.

The burning sensation took such a hold of his soul,

That he stood up and took a path into the desert.

One of the companions in the field asked him,

What did you see that changed your state?

At first, you kissed the earth in its place,

You should not end by striking at the back of your foot.

Kavul smiled, trembling from fear and hope,

A shiver fell upon him, as though a willow in the wind.

In the end, it was only submission to Allah,

Nothing seemed of importance to me, nor any person.

A commotion arose in a city from the west,

An elderly man with a blessed disposition was taken.

That same hadith still echoes in my ears,

When they put the shackles on his feet and hands.

He said, 'If the king does not give the signal,

Who would dare to plunder?'

Such an enemy should be loved as a friend,

For I know him to be a friend placed over me.

Whether it is honor and prestige, or humiliation and restraint,

I recognize the truth, not the likes of Amr and Zayd.

Do not worry about the cause, O wise one,

When the wise doctor sends bitter medicine.

Eat whatever comes from the hand of the beloved,

For no patient is wiser than the doctor.
