Section 22 - On the Listening of Mystics and the Discourse of Truth and Falsehood: If you are a man of love, detach yourself...

If you are a man of love, take a little of yourself,

Otherwise, take the path of safety before you.

Do not fear love, for it will turn you to dust,

For you will remain if it leads to your destruction.

A plant cannot grow from a proper seed,

Unless first, its state changes.

With the truth, He will grant you familiarity,

That will free you from the grasp of yourself.

As long as you are with yourself, there is no way forward within yourself,

And only in this realization is one aware of the state of selflessness.

It is not the musician whose tune is that of the animal,

It is the dance of the heart if you have love and passion.

The fly does not land near a troubled heart,

For he, like the fly, does not touch the head.

Neither does the insect know the disordered from the orderly,

The poor man cries out like the bird’s song.

The singer does not remain silent,

But the ear is not always open.

When the crazy ones worship wine,

They do so with the sound of the wine mill in their voices.

They enter the wheel, spinning in circles,

And the wheel weeps for itself.

They bow their heads in submission,

And when they have no strength left, they tear their collars.

Do not criticize the poor, the drunk, the bewildered,

For he is drowning in that wine, striking both his hands and feet.

I do not say, 'What is the dance?', O brother,

Unless I know the listener, who they are.

If from the tower of meaning his bird takes flight,

An angel would fall short of its journey.

But if a man is engrossed in amusement and play,

The demon grows stronger in his mind.

When a man of dance is overcome by lust,

He rises at the sweet sound of music, not in drunkenness.

The flower is disturbed by the morning breeze,

Not the firewood, which only the axe can split.

The world is full of music, drunkenness, and passion,

But what can the blind see in the mirror?

Do you not see the camel at the sound of the Arab,

How it dances when the sound fills it with joy?

When the camel has the thrill of joy in its head,

If a man does not have it, he is a donkey.
