Section 23 - A Story: Someone's donkey got stuck in the mud.

Someone's donkey had fallen into the mud

Grief for it had caused him great distress (lit. blood in his heart).

Desert, rain, cold, and flood

Had cast darkness upon the surrounding horizons.

All night in this sorrow until dawn

He uttered curses, imprecations, and insults.

Neither enemy nor friend escaped his tongue

Nor the Sultan to whom this land belongs.

By chance, the owner of that vast plain

Passed by him in that deplorable state.

He heard these words far from propriety

Neither was there patience to listen, nor a reason to reply.

The king, ashamed, looked at his retinue

Saying, 'Why is this madness directed at me?'

One said, 'O King, strike him with your sword'

For he has spared no one, neither daughter nor wife.

The high-minded Sultan looked

And saw himself in trouble (due to the man's words) and the donkey in the mud.

He forgave the state of the poor man

And swallowed his anger at the harsh words.

He gave him gold, a horse, and a fur coat

How good is kindness in a time of anger!

Someone said to him, 'O old man without sense or wit'

'It's amazing you escaped being killed.' He said, 'Be quiet.'

If I complained of my own pain

He bestowed gifts befitting his own (greatness).

Repaying evil with evil is an easy recompense

If you are a man, do good to those who do evil to you.
