Section 31 - The story of a penniless boxer: A boxer who had neither luck nor fortune

A boxer had no fortune or livelihood

Neither his evening meal nor his breakfast was prepared.

From the oppression of his stomach, he carried clay on his back

For it was impossible to earn a living by boxing.

Constantly from the disorder of the times

His heart felt regret and his body was mourning.

Sometimes he fought with the arrogant world

Sometimes, from his turbulent fate, his face was sour.

Sometimes, from seeing the sweet life of people

Bitter water went down his throat.

Sometimes he wept from his disordered affairs

Saying, 'Who has seen a life more bitter than this?'

Others drink honey and eat chicken and lamb

My bread does not even see greens (as a condiment).

If you ask for justice, this is not good

I am naked and the cat has a fur coat.

What if my foot in this clay work

Had sunk into a treasure according to my heart's desire!

Perhaps for a time I would have pursued my desires

And shaken off the dust of hardship from myself.

I heard that one day the earth split open

And found the decayed bones of a jaw.

His necklace was broken in the earth

The pearls of his teeth were scattered.

The speechless mouth was giving advice and secrets

That, 'O master, make peace with poverty.'

Is not this the state of the mouth under the earth?

Whether it tasted sugar or the blood of its heart.

Do not grieve over the turning of the times

For many times will turn without us.

At the very moment this thought occurred to him

Grief set aside its baggage from his mind.

That, 'O soul without judgment, plan, or intelligence'

'Bear the burden of care and do not kill yourself.'

Whether a slave carries a burden on his head

Or his head reaches the heights of the sky

At the moment when his condition changes

With death, both will depart from his head.

Neither sorrow nor joy will remain, but

The reward of deeds and a good name will remain.

Generosity has a foundation, not a diadem and throne

Give, for this will remain from you, O fortunate one.

Do not rely on kingdom, status, and retinue

For it has been before you and will be after you as well.

The possessor of wealth worries about religion

For the world will pass in any case.

If you do not want your kingdom to fall apart

You must have concern for both kingdom and religion together.

Scatter gold, when you intend to leave the world

As Saadi would scatter pearls of wisdom if he did not have gold.
