Section 36 - A statement on comforting artists: Two, fostered, O King, conquerors of the world
Nurture two types of men, O king who conquers lands
One skilled in warfare and the other in counsel.
From among the renowned, those win the prize of fortune
Who nurture both the wise and the swordsmen.
Anyone who has not wielded both the pen and the sword
If he dies, do not say 'alas' (do not grieve for him).
Cherish the penman and the swordsman
Not the musician, for manliness does not come from women (or effeminate men).
It is not manly for the enemy to be equipped for war
While you are intoxicated with the cupbearer and the sound of the harp.
Many people of high status sat down to play (neglected their duties)
And their fortune slipped away from their hands through play.
