Section 40 - A statement on caution with an enemy who pretends to be obedient: If your enemy becomes a friend

بخش ۴۰ - گفتار اندر حذر از دشمنی که در طاعت آید: گرت خویش دشمن شود دوستدار

If your own enemy becomes an apparent friend

Beware, do not be safe from his deception.

گرت خویش دشمن شود دوستدار

ز تلبیسش ایمن مشو زینهار

For his inside will be wounded with hatred towards you

When he remembers the affection of his own kin.

که گردد درونش به کین تو ریش

چو یاد آیدش مهر پیوند خویش

Do not see the sweet words of the malevolent

For it is possible for there to be poison in honey.

بد اندیش را لفظ شیرین مبین

که ممکن بود زهر در انگبین

Someone saves his life from the harm of the enemy

Who considers even his friends as (potential) enemies.

کسی جان از آسیب دشمن ببرد

که مر دوستان را به دشمن شمرد

That mischievous one keeps his money in his purse

Who sees all people as purse-snatchers (thieves).

نگه دارد آن شوخ در کیسه در

که بیند همه خلق را کیسه بر

A soldier who rebels against his commander

Do not employ him in your service as much as you can.

سپاهی که عاصی شود در امیر

ورا تا توانی به خدمت مگیر

He who did not appreciate his own leader

Will not appreciate you either, fear his treachery.

ندانست سالار خود را سپاس

تو را هم ندارد، ز غدرش هراس

Do not rely on his oaths and promises

Appoint a secret guard over him.

به سوگند و عهد استوارش مدار

نگهبان پنهان بر او بر گمار

Give the novice a long rope (give him time and opportunity)

Do not break it, lest you never see him again.

نو آموز را ریسمان کن دراز

نه بگسل که دیگر نبینیش باز

When you capture the enemy's territory through war and siege

Entrust it to its prisoners (former inhabitants).

چو اقلیم دشمن به جنگ و حصار

گرفتی، به زندانیانش سپار

For a captive, like a tooth embedded in blood (firmly attached)

Will extract blood from the throat of the oppressor.

که بندی چو دندان به خون در برد

ز حلقوم بیدادگر خون خورد

When you wrest a land from the enemy's hand

Keep the populace in a better condition than he did.

چو بر کندی از دست دشمن دیار

رعیت به سامان تر از وی بدار

For if he knocks on the door of battle again

The common people will bring ruin upon him.

که گر باز کوبد در کارزار

بر آرند عام از دماغش دمار

And if you harm the city dwellers

Do not close the city gates in the face of the enemy.

وگر شهریان را رسانی گزند

در شهر بر روی دشمن مبند

Do not say the enemy is wielding his sword at the gate

For the enemy's accomplice is inside the city.

مگو دشمن تیغ زن بر در است

که انباز دشمن به شهر اندر است
