Section 6 - The Story of the Miser and the Unworthy Son: One left behind a hundred thousand dinars.

Someone passed away, leaving behind a hundred thousand dinars

A wise and compassionate heir inherited it.

He did not hold onto the gold like misers

But generously gave it away like free men.

His door was never empty of dervishes (poor people)

Travelers were in his guesthouse.

He made both his own heart and the hearts of strangers happy

Not like his father, who hoarded silver and gold.

A critic said to him: 'O extravagant one!'

Do not scatter everything you have at once.

One can gather a harvest in a year

But it is not wise to burn it in one breath.

When you do not have patience in hardship

Save for times of abundance.

How well the village woman said to her daughter

That in times of prosperity, save for hardship.

Always keep a water skin and a jar

For the stream does not always flow in the village.

One can find the afterlife through this world (by doing good deeds with worldly wealth)

One can turn away the lion's paw with gold (use wealth to overcome difficulties).

Do not scatter gold on friends all at once

And be mindful of the harm of enemies.

If you are in hardship, do not go to a friend

And if you have money, come and bring it.

If you place your face on the dust of his feet (show great humility)

He will not answer you with empty hands (he will help you if he can).

The owner of gold can blind the eyes of a demon

And bring the powerful jinn Sakhr into his net.

Do not pursue beautiful people empty-handed

For without money, people are worth nothing.

No hope arises with empty hands

With gold, you can blind the white demon (overcome great difficulties).

And if you put everything you find in your palm (spend everything you earn)

Your palm will remain empty in times of need.

Beggars will never become strong through your efforts

I fear that you will become weak (impoverished).

When the preventer of good (the critic) told this story

The vein of the generous man did not remain calm (he became indignant).

His heart became scattered (distressed) by that fault-finder

He became agitated and said, 'O scatterer of words (garrulous one)'

The wealth that surrounds me

My father said is the inheritance of my grandfather.

Did they not keep it with miserliness?

Did they not die with regret and leave it behind?

The wealth of my father did not fall into my hands

So that it would fall into the hands of my son after me.

It is better that people eat it today

Than that they plunder it tomorrow after me.

Eat, dress, give, and provide comfort

What are you keeping for others?

People of wisdom take (their good deeds) with them from the world

The base person remains with regret.

Give gold and wealth now, for it is yours

For after you, it is beyond your control.

In this world, you can buy the hereafter

Buy it, my dear, or else you will bear regret.
