Mending one's own old cloak

Is better than asking for a borrowed garment.

Most of Saadi's speech is joyful and witty, and for this reason, the tongues of the narrow-minded become long in reproach, because wasting one's mind and consuming the smoke of a lamp without benefit is not the work of the wise. However, it is not hidden from the clear judgment of the wise, to whom the speech is addressed, that he has strung the pearls of healing admonitions in the thread of expression and mixed the bitter medicine of advice with the honey of elegance so that their weary nature may not be deprived of the blessing of acceptance. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.

We have given advice in its proper place,

We have spent a time in this.

If it does not reach the ears of anyone's desire,

The message is only for the messengers.

O you who look into it, ask God for mercy

Upon the author and ask forgiveness for its owner.

And seek for yourself from the good you desire with it,

And after that, forgiveness for its writer.
