Hekayat 23: Divine guidance
Divine grace guided a lost soul in forbidden paths with the lamp of success, until he joined the circle of those who seek truth.
By the blessing of the dervishes' presence and the sincerity of their breath, his vices were transformed into virtues.
He abstained from desires and passions, yet the tongues of the critics remained long against him, saying that he was still on his old ways and his asceticism and obedience were unreliable.
Through apology and repentance, one can escape God's punishment,
But one cannot escape the tongues of people.
He could not bear the oppression of tongues and complained to the spiritual guide.
He replied: How do you express gratitude for this blessing, that you are better than they think of you?!
How long will you say that the ill-wishers and the envious
Are the fault-finders of me, the poor one?
Sometimes they rise to shed my blood,
Sometimes they sit to wish me ill.
If you are good and people speak ill of you,
It is better than being bad and them seeing you as good.
But for me—whose good opinion of everyone about me is complete, while I am in deficiency—it is permissible to worry and be concerned.
Indeed, I am hidden from the eyes of my neighbors,
And God knows my secrets and my open deeds.
I have closed the door to myself from people,
So that they do not spread our faults.
What is the use of a closed door when the Knower of the unseen,
Is the knower of the hidden and the manifest?
