Hekayat No. 9: I have heard that in these days an old man...
I have heard that in these days, an old man
Has conceived the idea in his old age to take a spouse.
He asked for a beautiful girl named Gohar
As if he hid her jewel box from the eyes of people.
As was the custom of weddings, there was a spectacle
But with the first attempt, the Sheikh's staff failed.
He drew the bow but did not hit the target, for one cannot sew
A thick garment except with a steel needle.
He began complaining to his friends and making excuses
That my home and possessions were completely lost to this bold-eyed one.
So much war and strife arose between the husband and wife
That it reached the chief of police and the judge, and Saadi said:
After this disgrace and scandal, the fault is not the girl's
You whose hand trembles, how can you pierce a pearl?
The benefit of the sea would be good if there were no fear of waves
The company of a flower would be pleasant if there were no worry of thorns.
Yesterday, like a peacock, I prided myself in the garden of union
Today, because of separation from my beloved, I writhe like a snake.
