Section 1: Then Kay Kavus made this decision
After that, Kavus made this decision,
That he would move from his place in kingship.
He went from Iran to Turan and China,
After that, he passed through the land of Makran.
From Makran, he advanced in array to Zereh,
He did not see any hardship along the way.
Every chieftain accepted tribute and tax,
He did not test the strength of the bull against the lion.
In this manner, they proudly went to Berber,
They became world-seekers with throne and crown.
The king of Berber prepared for war,
The world changed in its hue.
An army came from Berber to battle,
Which arose from the king's army of festivity.
The air was as if it became a forest of spears,
The sun became anxious from the dust of the horses.
From the dust of the army, the elephants became invisible,
No one could see hands and reins from the dust.
Troop after troop came into the battle,
In such a way that waves rise from the water.
When Goudarz saw the world in this state,
He drew his heavy mace from his waist.
He struck his horse among a thousand renowned warriors,
With spears and arrows that pierced armor.
He clashed and tore through the heart of the army,
The king went swiftly behind him.
You would say that no rider remained from Berber,
No spear-bearer remained around.
Whoever was old in the city,
When they saw the wind of battle turned against them,
They all came before King Kavus,
They came with wounded hearts and full of guilt.
That we are the king's servants and slaves,
We have all submitted to paying tribute.
Instead of dirhams, we will give gold and jewels,
And place thanks upon the treasurer.
Kavus forgave and treated them kindly,
And established a new path and custom for them.
From that place, the sound of cymbals and bells,
Rose along with the wailing of the karranay (long trumpet).
When he passed by the city of Makran,
He came towards Mount Qaf and the west.
When news of the king reached them,
They set out praying.
All the chiefs came to greet him,
And submitted to heavy tributes.
When they chose obedience, he took the road,
The king and his army went without harm.
The army headed towards Zabulistan,
And went to the hospitality of Pour-e Dastan (Zal).
The king stayed for a month in Nimruz,
Sometimes he wanted music and wine, sometimes hawks and cheetahs.
Not much time passed like this,
That thorns grew on the corner of the rose garden (adversity arose).
No one can escape from testing (adversity),
A decline will come to him when he reaches the peak.
When the affairs of the world became like that,
A decline appeared from the Arabs.
A man with lineage, wealth, and reputation,
Raised a banner from Egypt and Syria.
They turned their faces away from Kay Kavus,
And abandoned him humiliated in servitude.
When news reached the king of the world,
That he has a rival in kingship,
He beat the war drum and marched from Nimruz,
The army, with joyful hearts, and the world-illuminating king.
Everyone wrote their names on their shields,
The swords seethed in their sheaths.
He led the army from the plain to the sea,
To that side where the enemy appeared.
He built countless ships and boats,
He stirred up and arrayed the army on the water.
It was perhaps a thousand farsangs (leagues),
If you counted the distance by foot.
He kept advancing until between three cities,
In this way they seek their share of the world.
Egypt to his left and Berber to his right,
Zereh in the middle, towards wherever he wanted.
Ahead was the city of Hamavaran,
In every country a large army.
News reached them that King Kavus,
Had emerged from the water of Zereh with his army.
They became of one voice with each other,
The army's passage was towards Berber.
So many sword-wielding heroes gathered as one,
They assembled in the land of Berber.
An army that the sea, desert, and mountain,
Became weary from the horseshoes of their horses.
The ferocious lion had no resting place,
Nor did the wild ass find a path on the plain.
The leopard by the rock and the fish in the water,
Also in the air the clouds and the soaring eagle.
They kept searching for a path, but where was there a path?
For wild animals and beasts in such a battlefield.
When Kavus led the army to land,
No one in the world could see mountain or desert.
The world was as if it was made of swords and armor,
The stars were bright from the tips of the spears.
From so many golden helmets and golden shields,
They raised shining axes on their necks.
You would say the earth became a revolving sky,
And flowing Indian swords kept raining down.
From helmets, the air became like sandalwood (reddish-yellow),
The entire earth dark like ebony.
The mountain was torn apart by the bellowing of the bull-headed maces,
The earth became bent from the hooves of the horses.
From the sound of the drums in Berberistan,
You would say the earth became an army camp.
The Iranian army, with trumpets and war drums, arose,
Gorgin, Farhad, and Tus went forth.
And from that side was Goudarz Keshvad,
Like Giev, Shidus, and Milad.
They threw the reins upon the manes of the horses,
And poisoned the tips of the spears.
When they placed their heads upon the saddle pommels,
A roar arose and the splitting of axes.
You would say they were hammering iron stones,
Or striking the sky upon the earth.
Kavus moved in the center of the battle,
Army clashed with army.
The world became entirely dark from dust,
Vermilion rained down upon lapis lazuli (blood on the blue sky).
You would say hail was constantly falling from the sky,
Planting tulips within the stones (blood staining the ground).
Fire came out from the points of the spears,
The earth became like a sea of blood.
The three armies of the Iranians became so intertwined,
That they could not distinguish heads from torsos.
The first commander of Hamavaran,
Threw down his sword and heavy mace.
He became sorrowful and sought quarter from the king,
He knew that it was a time of calamity.
On the condition that from the city of Hamavaran,
The commander would give heavy tribute and taxes.
From horses and weapons, and from throne and crown,
He will send to King Kavus.
When he has given this, he will pass over it (disregard it),
He will not entrust his army to his land.
When Kay Kavus heard from the speaker,
He laid the foundation for a response to these words.
That you are all entirely under my protection,
Worshippers of my crown and throne.
