The renowned Garsivaz looked

(At) a thousand chosen Turkish horsemen

He gathered the experienced army

And went joyfully to Siavoshgard

When Siavosh heard (this), he set out on the way

He went to meet him with his army, hastening

They embraced each other

Siavosh inquired about the king

They led (him) to the palace from that place

Siavosh arranged the place for the army

The next day, Garsivaz came early in the morning

He brought robes of honor from the king

Siavosh, at those robes of honor from the king

Looked, and became like a flower in spring

He sat upon his ambling steed

The Iranian horsemen gathered

He went through the whole city and neighborhood, one by one

And then turned his face towards the palace

At that moment, a rider came to Siavosh like the wind

A rider came and gave him good news

That from the daughter of the army's champion

A child was born, resembling a king

They named him Farrukh Farud

He came in the dark of night, as Piran heard

Soon, me, with another rider

He said, "Go now, bring the good news to the king!"

The same mother of the precious child

Jarirah, the head of the exalted ladies

Ordered all the commanders

To apply saffron to the hand of that infant

They placed this letter upon (the messenger's) back

To take to Siavosh, the self-willed

Tell him that although I am old

The pure God has made me happy

Siavash said to him at the time of the moon (i.e., at night)

May this lineage never be empty

(He) gave the messenger so many dirhams

That the bearer became weary from carrying (them)

(They) went to the palace of Farangis, joyful

(He) saw that great, auspiciously-descended one

Several attendants with golden hats

Farangis, with a crown, in the forefront

(She) descended from the throne and scattered (gifts) upon him

(She) asked him about the city and the king

The heart and mind of Garsivaz came to a boil

(He) became quite different in manner and intellect

He said in his heart, "If a year passes like this

Siavash will consider no one as anyone

He has both kingship, and crown and throne

He has both treasure, and knowledge, and army

He did not reveal his hidden heart

He was twisting (with anxiety) and his face was yellow

(She) said to him, "Have you benefited from your toil?

Are you happy all year round with your treasure?

They placed two thrones in the golden palace

(They) sat down, joyful in heart and fortunate

A player of the lute, along with a wine-drinker

Came upon the jewel-adorned throne

From the wailing of the harp, the lute, and the song

(He) was sending greetings to the heart with joy

When the shining sun revealed its secret

(It) showed its face from above everywhere

Siavash passed from the palace to the میدان (square/field)

(He) began to play, circling the میدان

When Garsivaz came, he threw the ball

The commander then set his face towards the ball

When he caught the ball with a stroke of the polo stick

His opponent bit the dust of the میدان

From his polo stick, the ball vanished

You would say the heavens were drawing it up

He ordered that a golden throne be placed

And a javelin for combat be placed in the ميدان (square/field)

The two chiefs sat upon the golden throne

To see whose skill would shine forth

Garsivaz said to him, "O king

(You are) skilled and a memorial of the kings

Skill has also surpassed (mere) lineage

It is fitting that you show your skill to the Turks

(With) the tip of the spear, and with arrow and bow

You bring darkness to the earth for a moment

Siavash clapped his hands for that feat

He mounted his saddle, (and) sat down from the throne

They fastened five (layers of) armor together

That the body would be weary from just one layer of armor

(They) placed (the armor) on the line of the arena

The army watched it from every side

Siavash (took) a royal spear

Which he had as a keepsake from his father

Which he had in the war of Mazandaran

(And) used it to kill lions while hunting

He went to the arena, spear in hand

He twisted the reins like a drunken elephant

He threw the spear and lifted that armor

No fastening or knot remained on the armor

From the arena, he drew the spear upright

And threw the armor wherever he wished

The horsemen of Garsivaz, preparing a trap

Went with long spears

(They) circled around the armor many times

Not a single knot of the armor was lifted from the میدان

Siavash asked for four shields, of Gil (a type of wood)

Two of wood and two of tempered steel

He asked for a bow with swift arrows

He shot six arrows in between, three wooden ones close together

He drew one (arrow) in the bow and pressed (it) against his thigh

The heavy army watched his action

Through those four wooden and steel shields

The arrow of that renowned one passed

He also shot two wooden arrows in that manner

Young and old alike praised him

Of those ten (arrows), not one remained without passage

Everyone there invoked the name of God

Garsivaz said to him, "O king

In Iran and Turan, you have no equal

Come, let you and I to the arena

Let us both gallop before the army

Let us both take hold of each other's belt straps

Like two belligerent warriors in battle

Among the Turks, I have no equal

You will not see many horses like mine among horses

In the میدان (field/square), no one is your equal

Your opponent, if (he is) your height

If I lift you from the back of the saddle

And suddenly throw you to the ground

Know that I am braver than you

In horsemanship and manliness, I am superior to you

And if you throw me to the ground

I will not go to a place where they seek vengeance

Siavash said to him, "Do not say this

For you are a greater (warrior), a lion and a belligerent

That horse of yours is the king of my horses

Your helmet is my Adhur Gushasp (a sacred fire)

Choose one from the Turks other than yourself

Who will compete with me, not for the sake of vengeance

Garsivaz said to him, "O seeker of fame

No sign of (true) battle appears on (your) face

Siavash said to him, "This is not the (right) opinion

It is not proper to make a brother the object of combat

The combat of two people is war and میدان (field/square)

(It is) a heart full of anger, (but) a laughing face

In the world, you are the king's brother

(Yet you) bring the moon under your horse's hoof

I will do whatever you say, at your command

I will not break this opinion and pact of yours

Call one of your warrior lions from your companions

And set (him) upon this swift-footed steed

If indeed the banner of battle is mine

The heads of the arrogant are under my dust

The fame-seeker Garsivaz laughed

Indeed, he liked his words

He said thus to his companions, "O you arrogant ones

Who among you wants to become renowned in the world?

(Who wants to) bring battle against Siavash

And bring the heads of the arrogant under (his) dust?

(They) were listening, lips sealed

Garvi Zereh came forth in response

He said, "I am worthy of this deed

If he has no one to contend with him"

Siavash, from the words of Garvi Zereh

Frowned, his face full of knots (frowns)

He said to him, "O renowned Garsivaz

There is no equal for him in the army of the Turks"

Siavash said to him, "It is beyond you

The combat of brave men has become insignificant to me"

From among them, two champions must be arrayed

(And) desired by me for the میدان (field/square) of battle

One was renowned, his name was Damur

Who had no equal among the Turks in strength

(He) came, having girded his loins for that task

To the world-seeking king, the Kayanian Shah

Siavash turned his face towards the field

Damur and Garvi went, twisting (with pride)

(Siavash) bound the waist of Garvi Zereh

Thrust his claws (hands) in and tied the knot

(He) lifted him from the saddle and threw him to the میدان (field/square)

He had no need for mace or lasso

And then he turned towards Damur

(He) seized his chest and neck by force

He lifted him so disgracefully from the back of the saddle

That the army remained in astonishment at him

(He) brought him so easily before Garsivaz

That you would say no one can subdue him

(He) dismounted from his steed and opened his hand

Full of laughter, he sat upon the golden throne

Garsivaz was angered by his action

His heart became full of sorrow, his face full of color (changed color)

And from that golden throne, they went to the palace

You would say they ascended to the height of Saturn

They sat for a week with flute and lute

Wine, dalliance, musicians, and song

On the eighth day, they prepared to depart

The dignitaries and the exalted Garsivaz

(He) wrote a letter to the king

Full of entreaty, inquiry, and good wishes

After that, he gave him many gifts

And they departed from that prosperous city, joyful

On their way, they spoke with each other

About that skilled king and that land

Thus said the vengeance-seeking Garsivaz

That we have had ill fortune from Iran

The king of Iran summoned a man

Who, out of shame, made us sit in our own blood (i.e., put us to shame)

Two fierce lions, like Damur and Garvi

Who were mighty, belligerent warriors

Became so wretched, idle, and disgraced

In the impure claws (hands) of a single rider

Finally, he moved past this topic

I see neither head nor tail to this affair of his

Thus, until (they reached) the court of Afrasiab

No water flowed in that stream but murky water (i.e., things were not clear)

When (they came) near the commander of the Turan army

They arrived, and the king inquired about everything

(Garsivaz) spoke much and gave (Afrasiab) a letter

(Afrasiab) read (it) and laughed and became happy with it

The vengeful Garsivaz looked

At the fresh face of the king

He went, his heart full of vengeance and pain

At the time when the sun became lapis-colored (i.e., at sunset)

He was troubled all night until the pure day (dawn)

When the night tore its pitch-colored garment (i.e., when night ended)

The head of the vengeful man arose from sleep

He came to Afrasiab

They cleared the place of strangers

They sat and sought all kinds of counsel

Garsivaz said to him, "O king

Siavash has other customs and affairs

A messenger came from King Kavus

(And stayed) secretly with him for some time

Messages also came to him from Rome and China

(And) he remembers Kavus with the cup (i.e., drinks to his health)

A large army has gathered around him

The king's soul was troubled by this for a moment

If your heart had not become saddened by Tur (i.e., if you were not angry with Tur)

You would not have done injustice to Iraj in the world

Two countries, one fire and the other water

Have taken haste, one from the other, in their hearts

You wish to bring together two (things) blindly opposed

(And) you bring the wind into concealment

If I had hidden this evil from you

I would have had a bad name in the world

The king's heart became afflicted by that deed

(His heart) became full of sorrow from the harm of the times

(He) said to him, "For me, your love is (like) blood (kinship)"

It stirred (in him) and became your guide

For three days, we will bring counsel on this matter

We will bring better words to the place (of this matter)

When this counsel becomes correct for wisdom

I will tell (you) what you must seek in it

On the fourth day, when Garsivaz came forth

With a helmet on his head and his waist tightly fastened

The commander of the Turks called him forward

(And) spoke much about the affair of Siavash

He said to him, "O memorial of Pashang

What do I have in the world except you in my grasp?

All secrets must be revealed to you

Look deeply to see what comes to your mind

Because my heart became sorrowful from that bad dream

(It) brought a little deficiency into (my) mind

I did not gird my loins for war with Siavash

And from him, no harm came to us

When he bid farewell to his father's precious throne

(He) darkened (his own) wisdom and made me his warp (i.e., put me in a difficult situation)

He did not turn his head from my command for even a moment

Since he found such goodness from me

I entrusted to him my country and my treasure

We did not recall our own sorrow and hardship

I even established a blood connection (marriage)

And I cleared my heart of vengeance against Iran

I turned away from war and (my own) son's face

And entrusted (my) two dear eyes to him

After (all the) goodness and all kinds of hardship

(And after) sacrificing (my) country, crown, and treasure

If now I plot evil against him

A rumor will arise in the world

I have no excuse to (act) evilly towards him

Even if a little evil reaches him from me

The great ones will open their tongues against me

I will become a laughingstock in the world

(This action) will not be pleasing to the Creator of the world

Nor to the great ones on the face of the earth

There is no beast with sharper teeth than a lion

That does not have fear of the sword in its heart

If a distressed child (seeks) refuge from harm with his father

And his father makes the meadow his refuge from harm

Is it fitting that evil should come to him from (his) refuge?

Does the judge of the sun and moon approve of such a thing?

I know nothing except that I should call him to the (city) gate

And send him from here to his father

Even if he seeks only a ring sometimes

He should break off judgment from this land

Garsivaz said to him, "O king

Do not consider this important matter so lightly

If he goes from here towards Iran

Our land and territory will be utterly ruined

Whenever a stranger becomes your kinsman

He will know the secrets of your less and more (i.e., everything about you)

If you seek strangeness from him again

(This action) will lead to madness

(It) will be a stored-up enmity

(Like) scattering salt on a burnt (wound)

With this story, he gave a guideline

That the wind that comes out of the house

You cannot block its path

And if you let it pass, time will not pass (i.e., you will regret it)

Siavash knows all your deeds

Both from your actions and from your words

You will not see from him anything but pain and suffering

(And) the scattering of (your) lineage, name, and treasure

Do you not know that the keeper of the leopard

Will see nothing from (his) fostered (creature) but pain and claws (harm)

When Afrasiab reconsidered this speech

(He realized that) all the words of Garsivaz were correct

He became regretful of his own opinion and actions

And considered his own market (dealings) to be crooked

He gave this answer, (saying) "From this speech

I see neither a good beginning nor a good end to this calamity"

Let us wait until the opinion of the revolving heavens

Reveals the face (outcome) of this matter

In every matter, delay is better than haste

Wait until the tall sun rises (i.e., until morning)

I will see what the opinion of the world's keeper is

And towards whom the face of the revolving candle of the sky is turned

And if I call him back to the court

I will seek speech (from him) to see what secrets he holds

I am his guardian, without doubt

And I will watch to see what time brings

When any crookedness becomes apparent from him

(And) when his heart becomes implacable with (our) attempts at reconciliation

After that, there will be no need to blame anyone

The recompense for evil is nothing but evil

Thus spoke the vengeance-seeking Garsivaz

"O king, insightful and truthful

Siavash, with that equipment, glory, and stature

With that divine horn, and that sword and mace

He will come to your court with an army

And will make the sun and moon dark for you

Siavash is not someone whose (power) the king has seen

(Someone who) constantly raises his helmet above the sky (i.e., is very powerful)

And you do not consider Farangis either

You say she has become independent of the world

Your entire army will return to him (Siavash)

You will be the flock if you do not have a shepherd (i.e., you will be vulnerable without Siavash)

An army that sees a king like him (Siavash)

With that generosity, wisdom, and moon-like face

You call (him) to be my slave here

And be filled with disgrace and my kindness

No one has seen a lion paired with an elephant

Nor raging fire above and water below

If a lion cub, having not yet suckled milk

Someone keeps (him) in the midst of silk

He will return to his (true) nature when he grows strong

And will not fear the charge of a great elephant

Then Afrasiab became perplexed by that

He became sorrowful and constantly thoughtful

Delay came to him from his haste

That the Lord of the Stone (God) might be victorious

The head of the reckless is not praised

A wise man gave an example with this story

That if the wind were to blindly leap from its place

No branch, thicket, wing, or leg would remain (i.e., it would destroy everything)

A frivolous person is not exalted

Even if he is tall and slender in body

(They) went, troubled and their lips full of words

Their hearts full of vengeance from ancient times

(They) would go to the king from time to time

The suspicious Garsivaz was full of anxiety

(And) mixed (things) of every kind (i.e., spread rumors)

And stirred the heart of the king of the Turks

Thus, as time passed in this way

The king's heart became full of pain and vengeance

One day, the commander saw such a plan

That the place would remain cleared of strangers

He revealed this story to Garsivaz

And spoke much about the affair of Siavash

(He) said to you, "You must go from here

And you should not stay with him (Siavash) much longer"

You should inquire and say, "From that place of celebration

You do not intend to look after anyone?"

My heart is stirred from its place by your affection

Rise up and come here with Farangis

We are in need of seeing you

And your awake, skillful soul

On this mountain, we also have game for hunting

And we have wine and milk in cups of emerald

Let us spend some time and be happy

When you remember the prosperous city

Be in joy and walk happily

Why has wine and the cup become forbidden to me?

Garsivaz, preparing a trap

With a heart full of vengeance and a head full of secrets

When he arrived near the city of Siavash

He chose an eloquent speaker from the army

He said to him, "Go and say to Siavash

O pure-born, O seeker of fame"

By the life and head of the king of the Turan army

By the glory and diadem of King Kavus

That you should not rise from your place for my sake

Nor come to meet me on the way

For you are superior to that in culture and fortune

In glory, lineage, crown, and throne

That every wind must be bound in the middle (controlled)

(And) emptying that place of the Kayanians

The messenger arrived near Siavash

(He) kissed the ground when he saw him

When he told him the message of Garsivaz

Siavash became sorrowful and concealed (his feelings)

He sat thoughtfully, awake for a long time

Saying, "There is a secret beneath this"

I do not know what the well-wishing Garsivaz

Has said about me to that court

When Garsivaz came to that new city

(Siavash) came to meet him from the palace to the street

(He) asked him about the journey and the king's affairs

About the customs of the army, and the throne and crown

(Garsivaz) delivered the message of the commander of Turan

Siavash became happy with his message

(Siavash) answered thus, "With the memory of him (Afrasiab)

I will not turn my face away from the steel sword (i.e., I am loyal)

I am now girded for going

And I have joined my reins to your reins (i.e., I will accompany you)

For three days in this beautifully adorned rose garden

We will stay and busy ourselves with wine

For the world is fleeting, full of pain and suffering

Woe to him who is with sorrow in this fleeting world

When the wise king heard this speech

The vengeful Garsivaz was troubled

He said in his heart, "If now, along with me on the way

Siavash comes near the king

With this lion-like manliness and so much wisdom

He will trample my bow under his feet

My speech will become without luster

My stratagem will become false before him

Now, a plan must be devised

To cast his heart onto an evil path

For a while he was thus and remained silent

His two eyes remained fixed on Siavash

Yellow tears poured from his eyes

He sought a solution with the water of his eyes

Siavash saw him, his face full of tears

Like someone who is troubled by affection

He said to him softly, "O brother, what is the matter?

Is there a sorrow that can be heard?

If you have become saddened by the king of the Turks

You would have brought moisture of pain into your eyes

I am now coming with you on the way

I will wage war with the king of the Turan army

To see for what reason he harms you

Why he considers you less than himself

And if an enemy has appeared to you

Whose care and suffering must be endured

I am now your helper in every matter

When you wage war, I am your support

And if, near Afrasiab

Your (relationship) has become troubled for no reason

Because of the words of a deceitful, untried man

Someone has taken a place higher than you

The renowned Garsivaz said to him

"I do not have this matter with the king"

I have not come in distress from an enemy

Nor am I far from resourcefulness in manliness and treasure

From my very essence, an anxiety has arisen in my heart

Because I remembered those true words

Firstly, evil came here from Tur

From whom the divine glory departed

You heard how, with the uncommunicative Iraj

At the beginning, what foundation of vengeance was laid

And from that place up to Afrasiab

The fire of Iran and Turan has become like water (i.e., mixed, confused)

They were never mixed in one place

They both fled from counsel and wisdom

The commander of the Turks is worse than that

Now, the mangy cow is inside the leather (i.e., hidden, but its effects are present)

You do not know his bad nature, without doubt

Wait until the time for evil comes

First, consider Aghrirath

Who was killed unjustly at his hand

(He was his) brother, from the same body and lineage

He killed such a wise, innocent man

After that, many renowned innocents

Were destroyed by his hand

My particular sorrow from these words is for you

That you are awake in heart and healthy in body

Since you have come to this land

No evil has befallen anyone from you

You have always sought humanity and righteousness

And you have adorned the world with knowledge

Now, the foolish, heart-rending Ahriman (devil)

Has made him (Afrasiab) aggrieved with you

He has a heart full of pain and vengeance against you

I do not know what the Creator of the world wills

You know that I am your friend

And especially your helper in every good and evil

You should not suspect tomorrow

That I was aware of this judgment

Siavash said to him, "Do not worry about this

For the Creator of the world is my helper"

The commander gave us hope other than this

That he will bring night upon me in the white day (i.e., cause me misfortune)

If he had any grievance in his heart against me

He would not have raised my head in the assembly (i.e., honored me)

You did not give me country, crown, and throne

Land, territory, children, treasure, and army

Now I come with you to his (Afrasiab's) court

I will make his darkened moon shine (i.e., restore his honor)

Wherever righteousness is clear

The splendor of falsehood brings deficiency

I will show my heart to Afrasiab

More radiant than the sun above the sky

Do not keep your heart anything but joyful

And do not let your soul suspect evil

Whoever entrusts himself to the dragon's breath

Will not escape the decree of the Creator of the world

Garsivaz said to him, "O kind one

Do not consider him (Afrasiab) as you have seen him before

And moreover, in a place where the revolving heavens

Become fierce and bring wrinkles to the face (i.e., cause hardship)

The wise and knowing man does not know any magic

To bring his head out of its circle (i.e., escape its influence)

With this knowledge and this intelligent heart

With this tall stature and lofty opinion

You cannot find a solution to turn away (his) affection

It is necessary that bad fortune comes upon (you)

(He) has sold your bonds and laziness (i.e., plotted against you)

And has sewn up the eye of wisdom with a noose

Firstly, that he made you his son-in-law as a trap

You became foolishly happy with that word

And secondly, that he distanced you from himself

And held a feast in front of the dignitaries

So that you would be bold towards him

And conversation would cease in the world (i.e., he would have an excuse to get rid of you)

You, even more esteemed than the noble Aghrirath

Have no more kinship, connection, or bond (with him)

He cut him in half with a dagger

And frightened the army with his action

See his hidden (intentions), now make (them) manifest

Know this and do not be safe from his bloodthirstiness

Whatever thought was in my heart

Was wisdom and a craft from every door (i.e., multifaceted wisdom)

That same evil test was from the times

(And) from this vengeful, impetuous king

I related all (of it) to you one by one

I recited (it) like the shining sun

You cast your father away to Iran

And you were building a city in Turan

You gave your heart so readily to his words

And you were constantly concerned with his welfare

This is an evil tree planted by (his) hand

Whose fruit is poison and whose root is foul

He was saying this, and his eyelashes were full of yellow tears

His heart full of magic and his lips full of cold wind (i.e., insincere words)

Siavash looked at him in astonishment

Two streams (of tears) were flowing from his eyes onto his face

When he remembered the time of harm

When the affection of the high heavens would be broken from him

(And) not much time would remain for him

His life would come to an end in the days of his youth

His heart became full of pain and his face yellow

His heart full of sorrow and his lips full of cold wind (i.e., insincere words)

He said to him, "Whatever I consider

I am not worthy of evil fortune"

From (my) speech and actions, before and after

No one has heard anything bad from me

When (Afrasiab's) hand became bold with his (Siavash's) treasure

His body was surely troubled by his suffering

Even if evil comes upon my head

I will not deviate from his opinion and command

I will go to him now, even without an army

And I will see what the king's grievance is

Garsivaz said to him, "O seeker of fame

Your coming before him is not advisable

One should not go into the fire with one's feet

Nor be safe on the waves of the sea

You are foolishly rushing towards evil

And bringing your smiling fortune to sleep (i.e., ruining your chances)

I am indeed your helper

I will pour cold water on the fire (i.e., calm the situation)

A reply letter must be written

Revealing all the good and the bad

If I see his heart empty of vengeance

The time of prosperity will become radiant

I will send a rider to you

And I will illuminate your dark opinion (i.e., clarify the situation for you)

I hope from the Creator of the world

The knower of the manifest and the hidden

That he (Afrasiab) will return to righteousness

And crookedness and deficiency will be far from him

And if I see any anger in his heart

I will send a messenger immediately

You prepare as you should, quickly

Do not prolong the matter for yourself

Drive out from here to every country

For every renowned and great person

A hundred and twenty leagues from here to China

And three hundred and thirty to the land of Iran

From this side, all are your friends

Your worshippers and sympathizers

And from that side, your father is longing for you

The world is your servant and kin

Write a long letter for everyone

Be prepared and do not delay

Siavash believed his words

And his awake soul was deceived (lulled to sleep)

He said to him, "From that gate from which you speak

I will not deviate from (my) promise and banner at all"

You be the intercessor, ask him (Afrasiab) for me

Always seek righteousness and show the way
