Section 10: They came to the king's court rejoicing
They came proudly to the king's court,
With open hearts and good intentions they came.
When they went and performed obeisance before him,
He became enraged and gave no answer at all.
He shouted at Giv first,
Then he wiped the shame from his eyes.
“Who is Rostam that he disobeys my command,
Becomes base and deviates from my oath?”
“Seize him and take him to the gallows alive,
And do not turn the conversation with me about him.”
From his words, Giv's heart was wounded,
That he laid such a hand on Rostam.
He became enraged with Giv and with Piltan,
The whole assembly remained astonished.
Then the king ordered Tus,
“Go and hang both of them alive.”
Key Kavus himself rose from his place,
He blazed like fire from reeds.
Tus went and took Tahmtan's (Rostam's) hand,
The quarrelsome ones remained astonished at him.
That he took him out from before Kavus,
Perhaps he cast a spell on that sharpness (of Kavus’s anger).
Tahmtan became enraged with the king,
“Do not keep so much fire in your heart.”
“All your actions are worse than each other,
You are not worthy of kingship.”
“You should hang Sohrab alive,
And humiliate the troublemaker and malevolent one.”
He struck one hand hard on Tus's hand,
You would say a war drum was found from a raging elephant.
He fell head over heels from above,
Rostam passed by him quickly.
He went out and angrily mounted Rakhsh,
He said, “I am the lion-slayer and the crown-giver.”
When I become angry, who is King Kavus?
Why does Tus lay a hand on me, who is he?
The earth is my servant and Rakhsh is my mount,
The gem of the mace and the helmet are my crown.
I make the dark night bright with my shining sword,
I scatter heads on the battlefield.
The head of the spear and the sword are my friends,
My two arms and heart are my king.
Why should he harm me, am I not a servant?
I am a servant of the Creator.
If it is so that the brave Sohrab comes to Iran,
No one, neither great nor small, will remain.
You should each find a solution for your life,
Turn your wisdom to this matter.
You will not see me in Iran after this,
The land is for you, the vulture's wing for me (I will leave).
The hearts of all the renowned ones became sad,
That Rostam was the shepherd and they were the flock.
They said to Godarz, "This is your task,
The broken will become right by your hand.
The commander will not listen to anyone but you,
Your fortune will not be changed by this matter.
Go to this mad king,
And mention this matter anew.
Bring flattering and lengthy speeches,
Perhaps you will bring back the lost fortune.
The commander Godarz Keshvad went,
He strode quickly to the presence of the king.
He said to Key Kavus, "What has Rostam done,
That you have stirred up dust in Iran today?
Have you forgotten about Hamavaran,
And the deeds of the divs of Mazandaran?
That you say, 'Hang him alive,'
Exaggerated words are not befitting of kings.
When he went and a large army came,
A champion like a wolf.
Who do you have who will go to battle with him?
And will scatter dark dust upon him (defeat him).
All your heroes, Gozhdaham,
Have heard and seen, both more and less (everything).
He keeps saying, "May that day never come,
That a rider remembers to fight with him.
Someone who has a warrior like Rostam,
To harm him is a lack of wisdom.
When the king heard Godarz's words,
He realized that he has custom and way (is right).
He became regretful for what he had said,
His mind had been disturbed in vain.
He said to Godarz, "This speech is fitting,
The lips of an elder are better with advice.
The heart of a king should be wise,
For haste and quickness do not bring value.
You must go to him,
And tell many good stories.
Empty his head of my sharpness (calm him down),
Show him better times.
When Godarz arose from before him,
Then the hero quickly set his face (went).
The leaders of the army went with him,
Then they took the path towards Rostam.
When they saw the brave, elephant-bodied one,
All the renowned ones gathered.
They began to praise the hero,
“May you be eternal and bright of spirit.”
“May the whole world be under your feet,
May your place always be at the head of the throne.”
You know that Kavus has no wisdom,
His speaking sharply is not good.
He becomes angry and immediately becomes regretful,
He breaks his oath nicely from the beginning (changes his mind).
If Tahmtan (Rostam) becomes offended by the king,
Then the Iranians will have no fault (it will be the king's fault).
He himself has become regretful of those words,
He is biting the back of his hand from haste.
Tahmtan brought this answer back,
That I am independent of Key Kavus.
My throne is the saddle and my crown is the helmet,
My coat is the armor and my heart is set on death.
Why should I fear Kavus's anger?
Kavus is the same to me as a handful of dust.
My head has become full and my heart has had enough,
I fear no one except the pure God.
When the assembly became tired of the conversation,
Gudarz said thus to Piltan (Rostam).
That the city, the brave ones, and the army suppose,
They will take this matter to other words (gossip).
That the glorious one has become afraid of this Turk,
This has been going on as a secret for some time.
As Gozhdaham gave notice,
All the land and territory must be evacuated.
If Rostam is afraid of him in war,
There is no place for delay for me and you.
From the king's disturbance and his fighting,
I saw conversation at the court.
The whole conversation went about Sohrab the hero,
Do not turn your back on the king of Iran like this.
Your name has risen like this in the world,
Do not hide it with this turning back.
And also that the army has become distressed,
Do not darken this crown and throne in vain.
He recounted these stories to Rostam,
When Tahmtan (Rostam) heard, he remained astonished.
He said to him, "If my heart has fear,
I do not want it to separate from my body (I will not die of fear).
He turned back from this shame and came on the way,
Proudly and hurrying towards the king.
When he entered the door, the king stood up,
He asked for much forgiveness for what had passed.
“That quick temper is my nature and essence,
One must live as God has destined.”
“And from this unconsidered new malevolent one,
My heart became thin like the new moon (worried).
“I wanted you to find a solution for this,
When you came late, I showed quick temper.”
“When you became offended, O elephant-bodied one,
I became regretful, may dust be in my mouth (I regret it deeply).
Rostam said to him, "The world is yours,
We are all your servants and the command is yours.
“Now I have come to see what command you give,
May your spirit not be empty of knowledge.”
Kavus said to him, "Today we will choose a feast,
And tomorrow we will prepare for battle.
He arranged a royal place of entertainment,
The palace became like a garden of spring.
From the sound of silk (musical instruments) and the sound of the reed pipe,
The jasmine-cheeked ones before the king on their feet (dancing).
They drank wine until midnight,
The minstrels with open lips (singing).
