Section 11: He called forth the investigative scribe
(He) summoned the scholarly scribe before him
And scattered the abundant words
First, he remembered the Creator
And freed his soul from the debt of wisdom
After that, he began to praise wisdom
And offered prayers to the king of the Turks
(Saying), "O victorious king, and in (your) time"
"May time not (just) be a memorial of you"
"You summoned me, I became happy because of that"
"May your session be with the Mobads (Zoroastrian priests)"
"And you summoned Farangis as well"
"(You) adorned (her) heart with love and loyalty"
Farangis was lamenting at this time
With lips unmoving and body unmoving
She slept and bound me at her bedside
I see (her) seated between two worlds
My heart is full of your counsel and sight
Both countries are full of suffering and torment from you
When she becomes lighter from lamenting
(She) will be sacrificed for the body of the king of the country
My excuse is also her torment
My inner self is full of pain and anxiety for her
When the letter, sealed, came to hand
(It was delivered) quickly to Garsivaz, of noble lineage
The brave one requested three swift horses
And rode continuously, day and night, directly
The fourth one came to the king's court
Full of malice in his soul and a sinful tongue
Afrasiab questioned him extensively
When he saw him full of suffering and his head full of haste
The king said, "Why have you come in such haste?"
"How did you traverse such a swift path?"
He said to him, "Since the face of affairs has become dark"
"It is not fitting to count on bad times"
Siavash did not look at anyone at all
He did not come to meet me himself on the way
He also did not listen to speech and did not read the letter
He made me kneel before his throne
Letters were continuously sent to him from Iran
His affection was also bound to his mother
An army from Rome and an army from China
The earth roars at every moment
If you delay in his matter
Perhaps you will then bring the wind into your grasp
And if you delay, he will bring war
He will bring both countries into his grasp with valor
And if he drives the army towards Iran
Who can go before him as an avenger?
I have made you aware of my own view
From now on, turn away from your own actions
When Afrasiab heard this speech
The old times became fresh for him
He did not answer Garsivaz out of anger
His heart became full of fire and his head like the wind
He ordered that the reed (flute) be blown
Likewise the cymbals and trumpets and Indian drums
(He) set his face towards Siavash
With the renowned quarrelsome ones
At the time when the deceitful Garsivaz
Made heavy the strap of the stirrup on the saddle
Siavash entered the curtain in pain
With a trembling body and a yellow face
Farangis said, "O brave lion-clawed one"
"What has happened to you that you have become different in color?"
He answered thus, "O beautiful-faced one"
"My honor has gone in the land of Turan"
"In this way that the speech of Garsivaz is"
"From the compass, my share is the center"
Farangis took her hair in her hand
And pierced the Judas-tree flower with a filbert
That fragrant coral became full of blood
(Her) eyes full of tears and (her) face full of dust
(She) wept tears upon the silver mountain (Siavash)
Two tulips were split in two from the clear water (tears)
(She) tore her hair and poured water (tears)
Because of the words and deeds of Afrasiab
She said to him, "O king with a proud neck"
"What will you do now? Quickly reveal the secret!"
"Your own father has a heart in pain because of you"
"You do not bring up any mention of Iran"
"The path to Rome will come to you with delay"
"You will not traverse towards China, for it will be difficult for you"
"In the world, whom will you take as a refuge now?"
"Your refuge is the Lord of the sun and moon"
"May there be oppression upon his soul, month and year"
"Whoever plots evil against your body"
Garsivaz was saying now on the way
"(He) will surely come from the presence of the king"
On the fourth night, in the presence of the moon-faced one
(He) was inside, with color and fragrance
(He) trembled and started up from (his) sleep in astonishment
And let out a roar like a drunken elephant
(He) held the beautiful-faced one in his embrace
And said to him, "O king, what is wrong with you?"
He roared, and they lit a candle
And burned oud and amber for him
The daughter of Afrasiab asked him
"O wise king, what did you see in your dream?"
Siavash said to her, "From my dream"
"Do not open your lips at all in the assembly"
Thus I saw in a dream, O silver cypress
That there was a boundless river of water
A mountain of fire on the other side
Warriors holding spears, occupying the edge of the water
From one side, the fire became swift
And blazed around Siavash
(He held) fire in one hand, water in the other
And before him were an elephant and Afrasiab
(You) saw me, (your) face turned grim
And you blew upon that swiftly burning fire
When Garsivaz kindled that fire
From the kindling, he burned me
Farangis said, "This is nothing but goodness"
"Look for a moment, be thoughtful"
Misfortune is coming upon Garsivaz
He will be killed by the commander of Rum
Siavash summoned the entire army
And remained for a time at the palace gate
He prepared and sat down, dagger in hand
And sent out scouts towards the Ganges
When two portions of the dark night had passed
The scout then came from the plain
That Afrasiab and a vast army
Appeared from afar, galloping on the road
From nearby, Garsivaz came, hastening
Saying, "Prepare for the safety of your life"
No benefit came from my words
I saw nothing from the fire except dark smoke
See what must now be done
Where the army should be deployed
Siavash did not know what his action meant
His words came true to him
Farangis said, "O wise king"
"Do not look at us in any way"
Sit upon a swift-paced steed
Do not be at all safe in the land of Turan

I want you alive, so that you remain in (your) place
Take care of yourself and do not trust anyone

Siavash said to him, "That dream of mine"
Has come true, and my honor has become dark
My life is coming to an end
Grief and pain and sorrow are coming upon me
Such is the way of the high heavens
Sometimes it keeps (one) happy, sometimes destitute
Even if my palace reached the planet Saturn
Still, the poison of the world must be tasted
Even if the years become a thousand and two hundred
There is no place for me except the dark earth
No one seeks light from the night
Where (one) has much benefit from knowledge

You have five months of pregnancy
If there is a chance of survival from this famous one (child)

If your tree bears male fruit
(It) will bring forth a famous king

Name (him) the glorious Keikhosrow
And comfort your heart by grieving for him
Thus will this swift-rotating dome (heaven) turn
The old house will not be called new
From now on, by the command of Afrasiab
I, the unfortunate one, will enter into (my final) sleep
(They) will cut off my head, the innocent one
And place a crown on my head from the blood of my liver
I will find neither a coffin, nor a grave, nor a shroud
Nor will anyone from the assembly weep for me
The soil of Turan will be my sapling
The old house will be the desire of lions

In this way will the heavens pass
(It) will not become tame with me in kindness

The gatekeepers of the king will disgracefully
Lead you naked, head and body, on the path

The commander Piran will come to the door
And will request you from (your) father with entreaty

He will seek protection for your innocent life
And will take you to his own palace, wretched and humiliated

And a strategist will come from Iran
With his loins girded by the command of the Creator

From here, you and your son, suddenly
(He) will take (you) secretly towards the Jihun River

They will seat him upon the throne of kingship
The birds and fish will be under his command

He will raise a cry throughout the world
Time will boil because of Keikhosrow

He will bring an army from Iran for vengeance
And the whole earth will become full of turmoil

(He) will entrust the earth to the auspicious Rakhsh (his horse)
And will consider no one in Turan as anyone
For my vengeance, from today until the resurrection
You will see nothing but maces and sharp swords
Make your heart strong upon these sayings
And cleanse your body from comfort and ease

When Siavash spoke (these) sorrows with his spouse
His spouse clung to him, weeping
Rakhsh became full of the blood of (his) heart and eyes
And passed towards the stable of the Arabian horses
(He) brought the dark-colored, noble (horse)
That would overtake the wind on the day of vengeance
Weeping, he took its head to his chest
And removed its bridle and reins from its head
He spoke a long secret in his ear
Saying, "Be vigilant in heart and do not conspire with anyone"
When Keikhosrow comes seeking vengeance
You must prepare his reins
Be his steed and traverse the world
Just as the head of a viper is struck with a stick
From the end, take (his) heart completely
For you will be his steed in (seeking) vengeance
(He) followed all the other steeds
And kindled (them) like fire from reeds
Himself and the rebellious ones he drew towards Iran
His face, from the blood (of his) eyes, became unseen
When (he) had traversed half a league of the way
The king of Turan's army arrived there
(He) saw the army with itself, and swords and armor
Siavash had tied knots on (his) armor
Garsivaz said in his heart, "This is true what (he) said"
"The speech from this sign that was hidden"
Siavash became afraid for his life
(Thinking) perhaps the malevolent one will be hidden
(He) was looking, this one at that one, that one at this one
For they had no malice in their hearts before this
From fear of Siavash, the warriors of the battle
Became calm and collected their senses and waited
What did that very intelligent wise man say?
That with an evil star, do not strive with valor
Thus he said after that to Afrasiab
"O king full of skill, with glory and splendor"
"Why have you come seeking war with an army?"
"Why do you want to kill me, the innocent one?"
"You make the armies of both countries full of malice"
"You make time and earth full of curses"
Thus said the unwise Garsivaz
"That in this matter, speech does not at all penetrate"
If you have come here so innocent
Why did you come to the king with armor?
Meeting (someone) with this sign is not the way
Spear and shield are not gifts for a king
Siavash knew that this was his (Afrasiab's) doing
The king's anger is because of his (Siavash's) presence
When Afrasiab (heard) the words of Garsivaz
And the tall sun rose
(He) ordered the Turks, "Bring here"
"And in this plain, prepare a ship of blood"
From Iran, there were a thousand brave soldiers
All renowned in the field of battle
The Iranians drew up their ranks
And prepared themselves for bloodshed
All of them waged war with Siavash
They saw no place for magic or delay
Now, bewildered, they said, "They will kill us"
"We must be drawn alone into the blood (shedding)"
Wait until (he) lays hands on the Iranians
And see and do not consider such an act small
Siavash said, "This is not the (right) opinion"
"This is not the basis and foundation of war"
If the turning wheel of heaven (fate), without (my) guilt
Wishes to destroy (me) by the hand of those (people)
Now there is no strength and intention in valor
For there is no war with the Creator of the world
That time came to an end for them
All were killed and their affairs turned upside down
The king was wounded by arrow and javelin
And fell down from behind the army
(He) rolled on the ground, spear in hand
A warrior tied his (Siavash's) hand with his armor strap
They placed a yoke on his neck
And tied his two hands behind his back like stone
The blood ran down his crimson face
Like a young eye that has not seen the day (i.e., innocent)
They went towards Siavash
The dust was behind and before the army
Thus said the commander of the Turan army
"Drag him aside from the path here"
"Separate his head from his body with a dagger"
"On a barren place where no grass ever grows"
"Pour his blood on that hot earth"
"Do not delay and do not be afraid"
The entire army said thus to the king
"O king, what sin did you see from him?"
"Why do you want to kill someone whose crown"
"Will weep bitterly for him along with the ivory throne"
"A head whose crown is (his) helmet"
"Should not be cut off, O wise king"
"Do not plant a tree at a time of joy"
"For time will bring forth poison as its fruit"
Garsivaz, the evil-natured one, was
Pointlessly a friend of those who drag people (to their death)
(So) that Siavash's blood would be shed in pain
Because of him, (he) had pain in his heart during the battle
From Piran, there was one younger in years
He was his brother and a fortunate peer
Whose name was Pilsam, a young man
One full of skill and with a bright soul
Thus said Pilsam to the king
"That this branch, its fruit is pain and sorrow"
I heard a story from a wise man
And wisdom also agreed with that
That a calm heart will be less regretful
And for the troubled, intelligence will become a cure
Haste and evil are the work of Ahriman (the devil)
(It brings) regret to the soul and suffering to the body
A head to which you are a king
I do not see it as right to cut off hastily
Imprison him and keep him until time
Becomes your teacher in this evil
When the wind of wisdom blows upon your heart
Then it will be fitting to cut off his head
Order his imprisonment, but do not be hasty
For haste brings regret in the end
Why do you cut off a head that is innocent?
For Kavus and Rostam will be avengers
(His) father is the king, and Rostam is his protector
You will be entangled in the end by this time
Like Gudarz and like Giv and Barzin and Tus
They will strike the war drum on the elephant's howdah
The breathing commander, the speaker, Piltan
That the assembly is insignificant in his eyes
Fariburz, Kavus, the fierce lion
That no one has ever seen him tired of war
They will all gird their loins for this vengeance
Door and plain will become full of vengeful ones
Neither I have footing, nor my kin
Nor anyone from the heroes of this assembly
It is likely that Piran will come early in the morning
And the king will also hear the story from him
Perhaps you yourself will not need this
Do not spread enmity as long as the world exists
Garsivaz said to him, "O intelligent one"
"Do not bind the desires of the young men"
The plain is full of vultures from the Iranians
If you are afraid of vengeance, this is enough for you
This evil that you have done is not enough for you
That you blindly listen to the advice of others
When Siavash roars from Rome and China
You will see the earth full of maces and swords
You have cut off the tail of the snake and wounded its head
And now you want to cover its body with silk?
If now you give him protection for his life
I will not be for the king (i.e., I will oppose you)
I will rise to a desolate place for fear of my life
Perhaps time will soon come to an end
Damur and Garavi went, twisting (in fear)
To the king of the Turks, full of color and fragrance (i.e., in a state of agitation)
(Saying) "Do not entangle yourself so much in the blood of Siavash"
For calm will come with difficulty in the preparation (for war)
By the guidance of Garsivaz's words
Prepare and remove the enemy from his place
You set a trap and caught the enemy with it
A clamor and uproar will arise from Iran
It is not fitting to take this (matter) into (your own) hands
The hearts of the evil-natured must be broken
You have destroyed an army in this way
See how the king's opinion will be
If you yourself had not harmed (him) from the beginning
This sin could have been washed away with water (i.e., easily rectified)
Now it is better that in the world
(He) should not be visible, neither openly nor hidden
The king brought such an answer to them
"From him, I have not seen any sin with my eyes"
But from the words of the astrologer
In the end, hardship will come upon (me) because of him
If now I shed his blood for vengeance
A dust storm will rise from the land of Iran
Releasing him is worse than killing him
And killing him is (also) my suffering and pain
Harm has come to me in Turan
Grief and pain and imprisonment have come to me
Even if the wise are suspicious of people
No one knows the remedy for (the decrees of) heaven
Farangis heard (this) and scratched her face
And tied her waist with a bloody girdle
(She) came on foot to the king
Her moon-like face stained with blood
She went before her father, full of pain and fear
Weeping, she poured dust upon her head
She said to him, "O king full of skill"
"Why do you want to make me destitute?"
"Why have you bound your heart in deception?"
"From (your) height, you do not see the descent"
"Do not cut off the head of the crowned ones without guilt"
"For the Judge of the Sun and Moon does not approve of this"
"Siavash, who left the land of Iran"
"Was constantly praying for you from the world"
"(He) displeased the king for your sake"
"Such a crown and throne and such a time (of glory)"
"(He) came and became your support and refuge"
"Now what did you see from him that made you stray from the path?"
"No one cuts off the head of crowned ones"
"For (he) remains with the crown on the throne for a long time"
"Do not unjustly oppress my body"
"For the world is fleeting, with wind and breath"
"(Fate) throws one into a well without guilt"
"And seats another with a crown on the throne"
"The end of both is in the dust"
"They are in the grasp of the grave from the stars (fate)"
"Have you heard what the hero Afridun"
"Did to the tyrannical Zahhak the Arab?"
"Likewise, from the great king Manuchehr"
"What befell Salm and the mighty Tur?"
Now living on the throne is King Kavus
Like Dastan and like the vengeance-seeking Rostam
The world trembles from Tahmtan (Rostam)
For Turan is not worth (fighting) him in war
Like Bahram and like Zangeh of Shavaran
Who do not fear the mace of the heroes
Likewise Giv, from fear of whom on the day of battle
The leopard covers itself with fox skin (i.e., hides)
(You) are planting a tree on the ground
Whose leaves will bring forth blood, (and) its fruit, vengeance
The water will be covered in black for the vengeance of Siavash
And will bitterly curse Afrasiab
O oppressor against your own body
You will remember my words much
(This is) not in hunting, that you throw down a wild ass
And throw other gazelles into turmoil
(You) are stealing kingship from the throne
In this matter, look well ahead of time
Do not give the city of Turan to the wind in vain
(For) you must remember the evil day (that will come)
She said this and looked at Siavash's face
And tore at her two cheeks and raised a cry
The heart of the king of Turan was burned for her
And he blindly sewed up the eye of wisdom
He said to her, "Turn back and do not linger here"
"What do you know what my opinion is about this evil?"
In his tall palace, there was a house
Farangis was a stranger to that house
They threw her into that house
And secured the door of the house
Then (he) ordered (them to bring) Siavash
That king, innocent and silent
(Saying) "Take this one to a place where no one"
"Will be his friend or helper"
(They) cut off his head completely from his body
His body will be the shroud for the vultures
(It) must be that the blood of Siavash on the ground
Does not smell (and) no grass grows on the day of vengeance
(They) dragged him, pulling (him) on foot
Like gatekeepers who drag people (to their death)
Siavash lamented to the Creator
"O (You) who are higher than the turning of time"
"Bring forth a branch from my seed"
"Shining like the sun upon the assembly"
Who will seek vengeance from these enemies (of mine)
And renew his own customs in the country"
Pilsam was going behind him
His two eyes full of blood and his heart full of sorrow
Siavash said to him, "Farewell"
"The earth is dark, and may you be an eternal warp (thread)"
"Convey a greeting from me to Piran"
"Tell him that the world has changed its form"
"I did not have such hope from Piran"
"His advice was bad wind for me, like a willow"
"He had told me that with a hundred thousand"
"Armor-clad and mail-clad riders"
"When your day turns (against you), I am your friend"
"In time of pasture, I am your meadow"
"Now running before Garsivaz"
"On foot, so humiliated and with darkened soul"
"I do not see anyone as a friend with myself"
"Who would weep bitterly for me much"
"When (he) passed from the city and the army"
They dragged him and took (him) towards the plain
From Garsivaz, that water-colored dagger
A warrior took (it) for the sake of (shedding) blood
(He) threw the mighty elephant to the ground
Neither shame came to him from that commander, nor fear
(He) placed a golden basin before him
And separated his silver cypress head from his body
In the place where the basin of blood had been ordered
A warrior took (the head) and turned it upside down
A wind with a dark black dust (cloud)
Arose and covered the sun and moon
(People) could not see each other's faces
Everyone began to curse the warrior (who killed Siavash)
