Section 14: When news came to Kay Kavus
When news came to King Kavus
That the life of Siavash was ruined
Like birds, his head from his body
Was separated by the leader of that assembly
His innocent cloud (body) with a dagger pitifully
They cut off the head from that royal body
The nightingale laments from the branch of the cypress
Like the francolin under the flowers with the pheasant
The whole city of Turan is full of sorrow and pain
Inside the thicket, the pomegranate leaves are yellow
They started lamenting in every mountain
There was no helper and no seeker
When King Kavus heard this
His famous head was turned upside down from the throne
He tore his chest and clothes and scratched his face
He came down to the dust from the high throne
The Iranians went with lamentation
Bound for that mourning, with wailing in their midst
All eyes full of blood and faces yellow
Tongues full of remembrance of Siavash
Like Tus and like Gudarz and brave Giv
Like Shapur and Farhad and lion-like Raham
All have made their clothes blue and black
All have dust on their heads instead of hats
Then news came towards Nimruz
Near the leader illuminating the world
That from the city of Iran arose a cry
Dark dust rose in turmoil
Kavus scattered dust on his mane
He tore all his royal garments
When Tahamtan heard, he fainted
From Zabul, a cry arose in wailing
Zal scratched his face with his claws
He poured dust from his branches and mane
When a week passed with mourning and sadness
On the eighth day, the trumpet sounded
A large army on elephants
Gathered from Kashmir and Kabul
They set their faces towards the court of Kavus
Their eyes full of tears and their hearts full of revenge
When they reached near the city of Iran
They tore all their Pahlavi garments
He swore by the Creator, the Sustainer
That never will my body fight without weapons
I will not wash my head from the dust
All over my body there will be sorrow and mourning
My helmet and sword are my cup
The raw iron of my arm is my trap
When he came near King Kavus
His head was full of dust and his feet full of dust
He said to him, "O evil-natured king!
You have scattered, and your seed has come to fruit
Your love for Sudabeh, the ill-tempered one
Has taken the crown of kingship from your head
Now you openly see
That you are sitting on the wave of the sea
From the thought of wisdom and the mighty king
A great loss has come upon us
The one who was the leader of the assembly
A shroud is better for him than the command of a woman
Siavash was ruined by the words of a woman
Blessed is the woman who was not born of a mother
Alas for that chest and height and stature of his
His steed and his royal adornments
Alas for that famous rider
That time will not see another like him
When he was in the feast, he was like spring
In battle, he was the crown of the famous ones
I fight with a weeping eye
I burn the world like my own heart
Kavus looked at his face
He saw bloody tears and that love of his
He gave no answer to him out of shame
Warm water poured from his eyes
Tahamtan went from beside his throne
He set his face towards the house of Sudabeh
He dragged her out from behind the curtain by her hair
He dragged her down from her great throne into blood
He cut her in two with a dagger on the spot
King Kavus did not move from his place
He came to the court with mourning and pain
His heart full of blood, his eyes weeping, his face yellow
The whole city of Iran went into mourning
Full of pain, they went near Rostam
When a week passed with mourning and tears
He sat in the court full of pain and anger
On the eighth day, he struck the brazen flute and drum
Gudarz and Tus came to the court
Like Farhad and Shidosh and Gurgin and Giv
Like Bahram and Raham and new Shapur
Fariburz, the fierce lion of Kavus
Garazeh, who was a brave dragon
Faramarz, the son of Rostam, who was in the front
The guardian of every border and the new leader
Rostam said to the warriors thus:
I have given my heart and soul and body for this revenge
That in the world, like Siavash, a rider
No famous one will ever gird his loins
Do not consider such a deed as small at all
Such a revenge cannot be considered small
Remove all fear from your hearts
Make the land of the Jihun River flow with blood
By God, as long as I am alive in the world
My heart is filled with revenge for Siavash
On that golden basin where his blood
Was spilled, unseen, unjustly
I will rub my face and eyes on it
Perhaps the pain and anger in my heart will lessen
And if my hand is still bound
And placed around my neck in a yoke
Abased in the dust like a sheep
They drag my two arms with a bent lasso
And if not, I and my mace and sharp sword
Will stir up a resurrection in the world
My two eyes will see nothing but the dust of battle
Wine and cup and feast are forbidden to me
At the court of every champion that was
When he heard such a voice from Rostam
All raised a cry with him
You would say that the field came to a boil
From the field, a cry rose to the clouds
You would say the earth became the prey of a lion
(Someone) struck the die on the back of the elephants with a cup
The heroes drew their swords from their sheaths
The bellowing of the cowhide drum arose
The sound of the brazen flute and the brazen horn
The world was filled with the vengeance of Afrasiab
You would say that the water came to a boil in the sea
There was no place for the walker on the earth
The air remained in ambush from the spears
First, the star came into the war
The earth and time washed their hands of blood
The warriors of Iran girded their loins
In front of them was the Kavian banner
Then Rostam of Zabul chose
From the warriors, the swordsmen of Kabul
From Iran and from the thicket of the Narun tree
Ten and two thousand assembled heroes
Faramarz was at the head of the army
Who was the son of Gu and the new leader
He went until he reached the border of Turan
He did not see anyone from the enemy on the way
In that border, King Sipijab was
Who was with an army and treasure and water
Varazad was the name of that champion
Brave and army-attacking and with a bright soul
His army was thirty thousand swordsmen
All battle-seeking from the gate of war
Varazad went from the center of the army
He came near to the valiant Faramarz
He asked and said to him, "Tell me, what man are you?
Why have you turned your face towards this border?"
It is fitting if you tell me your name
And seek the end of this affair of yours
Perhaps you have come by the command of the king
Or if you have come from the champion of the army
What news do you have of Afrasiab?
Of his throne and crown and majestic throne?
It should not be that without a name, at my hand
Your soul should come out of your dark body
Faramarz said, "O unfortunate speaker!
I am the burden of that royal tree
That from his name, the lion twists
When he brings wrath, the elephant becomes lifeless
Me, with you, the ill-natured demon-born
Why should I mention my name?
Tell the elephant-bodied one with the army is behind
That in the world, his avenger is enough
With vengeance for Siavash, a belt around his waist
He fastened it and came like a roaring lion
He will raise smoke from this worthless border
The air around him will not be able to bear it
Varazad heard his words
He considered his fight insignificant
He commanded the army, "Prepare
Put all the bows on the string"
He drew up the ranks of the army on both sides
They put iron helmets on their heads
From every side arose the cry of the warriors
The ear became deaf from the wailing of the drums
When the sound of the drums and trumpets came
Faramarz's heart leaped from its place
In one attack, from the warriors, a thousand
He threw down and returned from the battle
He made another attack, a thousand and two hundred
He said to Varazad, "This army is nothing"
For today is the divine favor
The recompense for evil is from God, evil
Such a vast army and so many riders
Became panic-stricken from one famous man
Faramarz went with a spear in his hand
He blocked Varazad's path to God
When the warrior Faramarz saw him
He raised a roar like a roaring lion
He spurred his black horse from its place
He tightened his grip on the spear
He struck one spear on his belt
Which broke the fastening beneath his armor
He lifted him up from the saddle with such force
That you would say he holds a mosquito in his hand
He threw him to the ground and came down
He gave some greetings to Siavash
He removed his famous head from his body
He stained his shirt with blood
He said, "This is the first head of revenge
The seed of conflict has been scattered and grown"
He set fire to the whole land
Smoke rose to the high sky
He wrote a letter to his father
About the deed of the quarrelsome Varazad
That when I opened the door to vengeance and war
I lifted him from the saddle of his leopard
In revenge for Siavash, I cut off his head
I set fire to his country
And from that side, a messenger came on the way
To the leader of the Turan army
That Rostam, the elephant-bodied, has come for revenge
The great men of Iran have gathered
They pitifully cut off Varazad's head
They stirred up destruction from the border of Turan
They completely defeated the army
They set fire to the land
When Afrasiab heard this news
He became sad from the old deeds
No unbridled horses remained on the plain
The shepherd brought the herd to the field
In the treasure, the mace and armor
The same spear and dagger of the Indians
The same treasure of dinars and pearls and jewels
The same crown and golden belt
He took the key from the treasurer
He scattered money in all the palaces and fields
When the entire army was arrayed
Wealth was scattered among them
The brazen drum and Indian bell were struck
The riders made their decision for battle
The commander drew the army out of the defile
And led the army from the narrow place to the plain
He sent for and summoned Sorkheh
And told him many stories of Rostam
He said to him, "O swordsman of thirty thousand!
Take the famous one from the battlefield"
Protect your life from the evil son of Zal
In battle, no one is equal to him
You are my son and my well-wisher
You are the pillar of the army and my moon
When you are awake of heart and a seeker of the way
Who dares to set his face against your face?
Now be in the front and be awake
And guard the army from the enemy
Sorkheh went out from before his father
And led the banner and the army to the plain
When the scout saw the dust of the fierce army
He turned and went towards Faramarz
From the army of Iran rose the sound of the drum
From the dust of the army, the air became ebony
The roar of the riders and the dust of the army
Made the world like night, the moon was hidden
The flashing of the diamond-like sword
The spearheads, tempered and bloodied
You would say that vapor rose in the world
They kindled the fire of battle
From the slain, heads were thrown on every side
The earth became a mountain from one end to the other
When Sorkheh saw such a battle
He saw the banner of Faramarz, the leader
He gave the reins to his proud brown horse
He entered with his spear and gave back his bow
Faramarz left the center of the army
And with his spear, he sought revenge against Sorkheh
He struck one spear like Azargoshasp
And cut him from the saddle towards the horse's mane
From the Turks, they came to his aid
They came full of war and conflict-seeking
From the turmoil of the Turks and the hard battle
Faramarz's spear became broken piece by piece
Sorkheh knew that his (Faramarz's) footing
Was not firm, he became carefree and turned his face
Then Faramarz, with his sharp sword
Attacked and stirred up a resurrection
The riders of Iran, like demons
Rushed after him, raising a cry
When Faramarz found Sorkheh in his grasp
He pounced in such a way that a leopard pounces
He grabbed his belt and from behind the saddle
Lifted him up and threw him suddenly to the ground
He threw him down, humiliated, on foot
And brought him to the camp from the battlefield
The banner of Tahamtan at that moment from the way
Appeared, along with the dust of elephants and army
Faramarz went before his father like dust
Victorious from the battles of the time
Before him, Sorkheh was with bound hands
And Varazad's mane was made low
All the caves and plains were full of slain
The heads of the enemies were turned back from the battle
The army recited praises for the champion
For that famous young son
Tahamtan also praised him
And gave many things to the dervish
The elephant-bodied one told a story about him
That whoever raises his head from the assembly
Must have wisdom and a famous essence
Skill as a friend and culture as his teacher
When he brings these jewels in their place
He becomes brave and brings forth wings and feet
From the fire, you will not see anything but kindling
When a world comes before it, it will burn
It is not surprising if Faramarz is rebellious
For steel has a heart full of fire
When he brings it to the hard rock
He reveals the secret of his heart
Then the elephant-bodied one looked at Sorkheh
He was a free cypress on the meadow
His chest like the chest of a lion and his face like spring
With black musk, he had painted on the flower
Then he ordered that they should take him to the plain
With a dagger and guards and a basin
They should bind his hands with a bent lasso
They should put him to sleep on the ground like a sheep
Like Siavash, his head from his body
They should cut off, and the vulture should cover his shroud
When Tus, the commander of the army, heard this, he went
And set his face towards shedding blood
Sorkheh said to him, "O exalted king!
Why do you shed the blood of me, innocent?"
Siavash was my peer and friend
My soul is full of pain and sorrow for him
My eyes were full of tears day and night
My two lips were always open in cursing
Upon the one who took that basin and dagger
Upon the one who took that king's head
The heart of Tus brought great compassion
For that famous one with turned-back fortune
He came to Rostam and said this word
That the son of the commander threw down the foundation
Rostam said, "If the king
Is so wounded in heart and mourning"
May the heart and soul of Afrasiab always
Be full of pain and his two eyes full of tears
Zavareh should bring that same basin and dagger
And entrust it to those guards of the army
They should pitifully cut off his head with the dagger
For a moment he cried out, and the matter was reversed
They hung his severed head and body on the gallows
And turned his two feet upside down over his head
He scattered dust on that slain one out of vengeance
And they tore his body with the dagger
O world, what do you want from your creatures?
What creatures, who have taken away the sorrow of those whose hearts are burned?
