Section 15: He went to the battlefield and seized the spear

He went to the battlefield with a spear in his hand

He remained astonished by his mother's words

They prepared a narrow battlefield

They fought with short spears

No binding or spearhead remained on the spears

Both turned their reins to the left

They drew their Indian swords

They made fire rain down from the iron

The blade shattered into pieces from the blow

What a wound that could bring about resurrection

After that they took heavy maces

The arms of the warriors became weary

With force, he bent the mace

The wind blew fiercely, and the warriors were grim

The armor fell from the horses

The armor was torn on the bodies of the warriors

The horse and the warrior were exhausted from the fight

Neither one had strength or arm to use

Bodies drenched in sweat, and all mouths filled with dust

Tongues were cracked from thirst

They stood apart from each other

Full of the father's pain and the son's suffering

O world, wonder of your actions

From you is broken, and from you is whole

The love of one of these two did not stir

Wisdom was far, love did not show its face

Even a beast recognizes its young

Whether a fish in the sea or a wild ass in the plain

People do not know from suffering and greed

To distinguish an enemy from a son

Rostam said that never a whale

Have I seen come to battle in this way

The battle with the White Demon became easy for me

From this manliness, my heart is hopeless today

A youth who has not yet experienced the world

Neither a warrior nor a famous hero among the great ones

The passage of time has brought me to satiety

Two armies watched this battle

When the horses of both men were rested

From fighting, binding, disgrace, and battle

Both placed their bows on the string

The youth the same as the old man

There was armor, chainmail, and tiger skin

No harm came to him from arrows and darts

The hearts of both became saddened by each other

Both grasped their belts

Tahmtan (Rostam) who, if he put his hand on a rock

Would tear it from the mountain on the dark day of battle

He devised a plan for Sohrab's belt

To move him on the saddle in battle

The youth's waist was unaware

Rostam's hand remained empty of skill

The two lion-like warriors became weary of fighting

All tired and having become late, they arrived

Again Sohrab, the heavy mace

Drew from the saddle and pressed his thigh

He struck with the mace and brought pain to his shoulder

He twisted and endured the pain with courage

Sohrab laughed and said, O rider

You are not steadfast against the blows of brave men

In battle, your Rakhsh (Rostam's horse) is like a donkey

The rider's two hands are worse than all

Although the ball was as tall as a cypress

Youth makes the old man as if he were young again

Weakness reached this one from that one, that one from this one

So narrow did the earth become for the brave warriors

That they turned their faces away from each other

They left their hearts and souls in sorrow

Tahmtan (Rostam) went to battle against the Turan army

Like a leopard spotting its prey

He entered the midst of the army like a wolf

That great army was scattered

Sohrab turned his reins around

And launched an attack on the Iranians

He threw himself against the Iranian army

Many famous warriors were destroyed by his mace

Rostam's heart conceived a bad thought

That undoubtedly harm would befall Kavus

From this newly risen, skilled Turk

Adorned with chainmail on his body and arms

He quickly rushed to his own camp

Because that was the thought in his heart

He saw Sohrab in the midst of the army

Having turned the water to ruby wine with blood

Rostam became grieved when he saw him

He let out a roar like a fierce lion

He said to him, O bloodthirsty Turk

Who from the Iranian army waged war with you?

Why do you reach out your hand towards everyone?

You came like a wolf among the flock

Sohrab said to him, the Turan army

Were in this battle without guilt

You first made an attack on them

No one sought battle or vengeance with you

Rostam said to him, whose day has become dark

What can the world-illuminating sword reveal?

On this plain there is both gallows and pulpit

That the world is illuminated under the sword

If it is so that the sword with the scent of a lion

Has become so familiar, you will never die

Let us fight at night with the sword of vengeance

Go, to see what the Creator of the world wills
