Section 15: When the army came from the battlefield

When the army came from the field of battle

Bodies full of blood and heads full of dust

News came from the Turks to Afrasiab

That the one with awakened fortune had fallen asleep (died)

That same famous Sorkheh was killed

Such fortune was quickly reversed

They turned his severed head upside down

They drowned his body in blood and hung it on the gallows

The whole city of Iran is wounded in the liver (heart)

They have girded their loins for revenge for Siavash

The head and crown of Afrasiab were turned upside down

He tears his hair and pours out tears

He said, "O generous one, O chief priest!

O famous Roda, O brave and wise one!"

Alas for the purple garment like the moon

Alas for that royal chest and stature of the king

He scattered dust on his head, crying out

He tore all the garments on himself

Thus he said to the army of Afrasiab

That we have risen above eating and sleeping

Make the eye of vengeance bright

Make a seedling from chainmail and armor

When the sound of the drum rose from his door

His army stirred at his court

He struck the brazen flute and fastened the drum

He made the sky kiss the earth

He called out to the proud kings

"O famous ones of the day of battle!"

When the sound of the drum rises from both sides

The quarrelsome man will not seek time

Make your hearts full of vengeance for the battle

Utter pure curses upon the Iranians

A cry arose and the wailing of the trumpet

The sound of the brazen flute and the Indian bell

The earth boiled from the hooves of the horses

Cries and roars rose to the clouds

When the dust of the army rose from the plain

A messenger came to Rostam from the lookout

That an army has come, heavy as a mountain

All battle-seekers, strong warriors

From the swords of the brave ones, the air became violet

They went with the Kavian banner

The cry of the army rose from both sides

The world became full of fighting men

You would say the sun and moon were in color

The star was in the grasp of a whale

The commander of the Turks arranged the battle

They took maces and daggers in their hands

Barman came towards the right wing

With an army of Turks, swift and rushing

Towards the left wing, Kahram the swordsman

In the center, the king with his assembly

And from this side, Rostam drew up the army

The air became unseen from the swords of the heroes

He arranged Giv and Tus on the right wing

The awake riders with elephants and drums

Like Gudarz Kishvad on the left wing

Hajir and the mighty ones all together

In the center, Rostam of Zabul

Armored, with a Kabuli dagger

You would say that neither night was visible nor day

The world-illuminating sun was hidden

From the hooves of the horses, the stony ground became colored

From the spears, the air was like the back of a leopard

You would say the air had become a mountain of iron

The top of the mountain was full of helmets and armor

Spearheads and banners rose to the clouds

The flashing of violet swords

Pilsam came from the center of the army

His heart full of blood, his face gloomy

He said thus to the king of the Turan army

"O full of skill, benevolent king!"

If now you do not withhold from me

A steed and armor and mace and sword

Today I will fight with Rostam

And bring all his name under disgrace

I will bring before you his head and his steed

The same helmet and world-bestowing sword of his

The soul of Afrasiab became glad from this

He lowered the tip of his spear from the sun

He said to him, "O famous lion!

Indeed, your elephant cannot bring him down"

If you bring the elephant-bodied one into your grasp

Time will be at ease from judgment

In Turan, there is no one like you in rank

In treasure and sword and throne and crown

You will bring my head among the revolving heavens

I will entrust to you my daughter and my country

Two shares from Iran and Turan will be yours

The same jewels and treasures and cities will be yours

When Piran heard this, he became very sad

He came to the sun-fortunate king

He said to him, "This young and sharp man

Is challenging his own body"

He is falling into doubt about his own name

He does not think about the end of his affair

No one runs towards hell on foot

Or even blindly towards the mouth of a dragon

If he brings battle with Tahamtan

He will bring his own head under the dust

The heart of the brave will be broken in battle

This saying is also a disgrace for the king

You know that your brother was younger

The affection of the elder was greater for him

Then Pilsam said thus to Piran

That he does not have a gloomy heart from this champion

That if I wage a war, a war of a whale

I will not bring disgrace upon the king through your fortune

Before you, with the famous four heroes

What I did, you saw the attack from me

Indeed, now my strength is greater

Breaking my heart is not fitting

This deed will come to pass by my hand

Do not turn bad fortune around the door

When the king heard this speech from him

He gave him a steed worthy of battle

He gave him with a sword and armor

The same spear and coat of mail and helmet

Pilsam prepared for that battle

He rushed like a lion with wind and breath

He said to the Iranians, "Where is Rostam?

Who says that he is a dragon on the day of war?"

When Giv heard this speech, he roared

He struck his hand and drew his sword from his waist

Rostam said to him, "Fighting with one Turk

Is not fitting, indeed, it will bring him disgrace"

Those two warriors clashed together

Giv and Gudarz rushed at Pilsam

Giv struck one spear at him, from the fear of which

Both of his feet came out of the stirrup

When Faramarz saw that his friend had come

His warrior friend had come to his aid

He struck one sword on Pilsam's spear

And the spear from his sword became cut

Again he struck upon his helmet

That quarrelsome sword was broken

Pilsam fought with those two heroes

In the field, like a fierce lion

Tahamtan looked from the center of the army

He saw two brave and precious heroes

Clashing with a lion-hearted man

Bringing dust from the wind to the clouds

Rostam knew that except for Pilsam

No one from the Turks has that strength and breath

And also that from the famous wise men

From the words of the astrologer priests

He had heard of the bad and good stars

He had traversed the world left and right

That if Pilsam from the bad times

Finds wisdom and the bond of a teacher

No one like him in the world from head to head

Will gird his loins in Iran and Turan

Indeed, his time has come

That he has come rushing into my grasp here

He commanded the army that from their place

They should not advance even a little

I will turn and grapple with the body of Pilsam

And see what he has in footing and horn and breath

He picked up a heavy spear

He pressed his thigh against his helmet and held it over his head

The stirrup became heavy and the rein became light

He brought the shining spearhead into his sight

He became angry and brought foam to his lips

He rushed from the center to the front of the line

He said, "O famous Pilsam!

You wanted to burn me with your breath"

He said this and rushed like dust

And engaged him in battle

He struck a spear into his waist

And lifted him from the saddle like a ball

He rushed to the heart of the Turan army

And threw him down, humiliated, in the center

He said, "Clothe this one in yellow silk

For he has become lapis lazuli from dust"

He turned the reins from that place

And came rushing to the heart of the army

Piran shed tears from his eyelashes

He saw the body of Pilsam far from the physician

The heart of the army and the king of the Turan army

Was broken, and the battlefield became dark

A cry arose from the army on both sides

Ten and twenty thousand quarrelsome warriors

The roaring of the drums on the backs of elephants

Went from every side for several miles

The earth became weary from the hooves of the beasts

Every mountain became a sea, and every plain became a mountain

From the many shouts and wails of the trumpets

The sky itself was moved from its place

The coral stone became blood, and the earth became blood

The heads of all the chiefs were turned upside down

They killed so many from both groups

That the earth, the sea, and the plain became like a mountain

A wind arose from the battlefield

And the dust of the army covered the air

The two armies rushed on the plain

They could not distinguish one from the other

The world became dark and gloomy like night

You would say that day was approaching night

Afrasiab said thus to his army

That the one with awakened fortune has fallen asleep (died)

If any one of you shows weakness in battle

My time will not last long

Bring ambushes upon them from every side

Bring them down to the ground with spears

He himself came from the center of the Turan army

Towards Tus, with a heart burning with revenge

He killed many from the army of Iran

The heart of Tus became sad, and he turned his back

A resourceful person came to Rostam

That today, this battle has taken on a different color and smell

The whole battlefield has become like a sea of blood

The banner of the commander of Iran is upside down

The elephant-bodied one came from the center of the army

After him, Faramarz with his companions

Many shield-bearers were in front

Whose hearts were fearful of Rostam

All the relatives and kin of Afrasiab

All with hearts full of vengeance and heads full of haste

Tahamtan killed many of them

Faramarz and Tus came to his aid

When Afrasiab saw that violet banner

He looked at the place of the banner

He knew that it was Rostam, the elephant-bodied one

Proud and from the lineage of Niram

He became enraged like a fighting leopard

He pressed his thigh and went to battle before him

When Rostam saw the black banner

He roared like a roaring lion

That famous hero came to a boil

He gave the reins to his swift-footed steed

He clashed with the rebellious Afrasiab

The battle of blood flowed like river water

The leader of the Turan army struck one spear

On the chest of the vengeful Rostam

The spearhead entered his belt

It did not work on his tiger-skin armor

Tahamtan turned his face in vengeance

He struck a spear on the head of his horse

The steed, from the pain, reared up

The quarrelsome king fell from it

Rostam sought his waist

So that he might shorten his path from the battle

Homan looked and saw from the side

He raised a heavy mace to his neck

He struck it on the shoulder of the elephant-bodied one

A cry arose in the army from the assembly

Rostam then looked behind

He sought the famous king from his shoe

The crown-bestowing hero became enraged

He spurred Rakhsh after Homan

He galloped for a while and then hastened

But fate was against him and did not find him

The commander of the Turks did not fall into his hands

He mounted a swift-footed steed

When Rostam turned his face from the battle

The quarrelsome one was fleeing

The sound of the trumpet rose from every side

The sky was moved from its place

The cry of the leaders rose to the clouds

The grinding of heavy maces

The brave ones all raised a shout

They raised their spearheads to the clouds

The earth was covered with slain and wounded

As if tulips had grown on saffron

The horses carried blood on their shoes

The feet of the elephants became ruby from the blood of the slain

The Turks were routed like the wind

For Rostam was giving justice with his arm

For three leagues, like a rushing dragon

Tahamtan pursued them suspiciously

And from that place, the elephant-bodied one returned

The army was completely weary from the battle

The mighty Tus asked Rostam

"How did the lion find a drum from a wild ass?"

Rostam said to him, "The heavy mace

When it recalls the shoulder of the warriors"

The heart of stone and anvil will not remain sound

It must first be on the chest and shoulder of the striker

The club with which Homan struck

Do not call it iron, for it was wax"

They returned to their camp

The army was completely needless of wealth

The whole plain was full of iron and silver and gold

Spearheads and bridles and helmets and belts
