Section 17: When his work was completed, he sat down
When he had completed his work, he sat down
Like a storm, he closed the path with his strength
He placed a Roman helmet upon his head
And one underneath him like the wind
The wild boars came to the gate of Sam
They gave no cry and did not utter a name
He told the warriors to act suddenly
To speak with the proud lord of the world
A messenger has arrived from Kabul
To the general of the Zabul tribe
He gathered a message from Mehrab
And brought it to the conqueror-general Sam
He came to Sam, the lord of the land
He spoke and commanded that the load be given
Sindokht dismounted from her horse and walked
She walked proudly toward the general
She kissed the ground and gave praise
To the king and the hero of the earth
She presented offerings, servants, horses, and elephants
And brought forth ranks of warriors from the gate, stretching two miles
One by one, they brought them before Sam
The head of the hero was amazed when he saw them
He sat down, deep in thought and drunk with confusion
He raised his hand in a gesture of lowliness and shame
Where a place for such riches could ever exist
What custom is this, sending a woman?
If I accept all of this request
The king of the flock will be distressed by me
And if I send Zal back from here
He will raise his wings like the Simurgh
He raised his head and said, 'This request is'
Servants and elephants, all arranged
Take this to the treasure keeper's hands
And give it in the name of Kabul's moon
The fairy-faced Sindokht stood before Sam
She spoke eloquently and with a joyful heart
When she saw the gifts accepted
She saw the good fortune had come and the bad had gone
Three idol-like beauties were with her
Jasmine-bodied and tall as cypresses
Each held a goblet in hand
She commanded them to sit in place
They poured out before the commander
All mingled with one another
When they settled matters with the hero
They cleared the house of strangers
Sindokht said to the hero
With your wisdom, the old become young
The nobles learned knowledge from you
With you, they dispelled the darkness
With your love, the hand of evil was tied
With your mace, the divine path was opened
If anyone was guilty, it was Mehrab
His heart's blood made his eyes moist
What has become of the innocent in Kabul
Where must they wander
The entire city lives for you
Servants and the dust of your feet
For fear that created wisdom and strength
That created the radiant Venus and the Sun
Such actions are not befitting of you
Do not tie your waist to shedding blood
Sam the hero said to her, 'Tell me
From what I ask, do not seek excuses'
You consider Mehrab as a lesser or equal
Where did Zal see his daughter
In face, in hair, in disposition and wisdom
Tell me, so that I may judge without fear
From the heights and the sight of his culture
Speak as you saw each one clearly
Sindokht said to him, 'O champion'
The head of the heroes and the backbone of warriors
First, I will make a strong pact with you
So that the earth and the sky shall tremble in fear
That no harm shall come to my soul from you
Nor from him who is dear to me
I have a thriving palace and courtyard
I possess treasures, kin, and foundation
When I am secure, I will speak all that you say
I will seek it with this honorable face
All the hidden treasures of Kabulistan
I will strive to bring them to Zabulistan
Except for anything else that may be of use
Let the wise see it and value it
At that moment, Sam took his hand in his
He treated him kindly and sealed the pact
When Sindokht heard his oath
She knew that his words were true and his bond strong
She kissed the earth and rose to her feet
And spoke the truth that was hidden within her
I am the wife of Zahhak, O champion
The wife of Mehrab, the bright-hearted one
The mother of Rudabeh, the moon-faced beauty
Whose hands send life to the world
All the generations before the holy God
Until the dark night tears apart and the day breaks
We have praised you upon our table
The same for the world-ruling king of the earth
Now I have come to know what you desire
Who is your enemy and who is your friend in Kabul?
If we are sinners and of evil nature
We are not worthy of this kingship
Now I come before you, needy
Strike if you strike, or bind if you bind
Do not burn the hearts of the innocent of Kabul
Where will the dark day enter into the daylight?
When the champion heard these words
He saw a woman with wisdom and a bright soul
Her face like spring, and her stature like a cypress tree
Her middle like a gazelle, and her gait like that of a partridge
She gave this answer: 'My vow'
Is true, even if my soul breaks apart
You and Kabul, and all those connected to you
Remain joyful in heart and healthy in body
I also agree with this, that Zal
Seeks his companion from the world, like Rudabeh
Although you are of a different essence
You too deserve the same crown and throne
Such is the world, and there is no shame in it
For there is no war against the Creator of the world
He creates as he pleases
We did not stay, yet we remain in turmoil
One is on high, the other in the low
One with growth, the other with loss
One is adorned with the growth of the heart
The other diminished by the lack of heart
One wrote a letter with the pleading of the pained
I wrote it near the high king
To Manouchehr, Zal went with gold
He became as you would say, a mighty man
He came with a saddle, which he had not seen
Nor had he seen the horse's hoof touch the earth
Thus the king will answer Zal
When he smiles, his decision shall be blessed
That the nurtured bird without heart has become
From the water of tears, its feet are stuck in the mud
If the bride is like her within with affection
It is fitting if they both rise from their skin
One with the face of the dragon's offspring
Show me as well, and take what you deserve
Sindokht said to him, 'If you are a hero'
Make the servant happy and clear in soul
The steed entered my palace limping
My head will rise to the high sky
To Kabul, we will bring such a king
We will bring our lives as offerings to him
The lips of Sam Sindokht saw full of smiles
He saw all the roots of enmity pulled from her heart
The brave runner moved like the wind
He scattered and gave the tidings to Mehrab
Do not recall any evil thoughts
Make your heart happy, for the guest's task is much
Now, after the letter, in a rush
I come, seeking nothing but time on the road
On the second day, like the sun's spring
It moved, and the head awoke from sleep
The precious Sindokht placed her face
At the door of the leader, the seeker of the crown
The envoy rose from the court of Sam
The moon among women called him by name
He came to Sam and offered him his prayer
He spoke to him for a long time
By command, he returned to his place
He became joyful, heading towards the Lord of Kabul
To do a new task for the guest
To show the new pact to the son-in-law
Sam, the hero, said to him, 'Return and go'
Say what you saw and tell Mehrab'
They adorned him with a fitting robe
From the treasure, they gave him what was more valuable
To Kabul, Sam took whatever there was
From the palace, garden, harvest, and blessings
Other animals were to be milked
For spreading and also for clothing
He gave it to Sindokht, and they held hands
She took it, and they also made a pact
She accepted his daughter for Zal
That both would live in joy as equals
You will be honored and a man of strength
He gave it to him and said, 'This is your duty'
Stay in Kabul and remain in happiness
From now on, fear not the evil of suspicion
That faded moon’s face became radiant
With good fortune, they set their path
