Section 18: Again they tightly fastened the horses
Again they tied their horses firmly
Adverse fate was turning over their heads
They began to wrestle
Both grasped each other's belts
Whenever ill fate brings wrath
It turns hard stone into wax
The proud Sohrab with the strength of his hand
You would say the high heavens had bound him
Rostam was distressed, he lost his grip
He seized that chest and mane of the warring leopard
He bent the back of the brave young man
Time came, he had no strength left
He struck him to the ground like a lion
He knew that he would not remain down
He quickly drew his sharp sword from his waist
He tore the heart of the vigilant lion
He twisted then and let out a sigh
He cut short thoughts of good and evil
He said to him, this came upon me from myself
Time gave the key into your hand
You are innocent in this, for this hunchback (fate)
Raised me up and quickly killed me
In jest, my peers will say
Such a mane of mine came to the dust
My mother gave me a sign of my father
Affection entered my soul and head
Whenever you were thirsty for blood
You stained that gleaming dagger
Time will become thirsty for your blood
The hair on your body will become a dagger
Now, if you become a fish in the water
Or if you become like night in darkness
Or if you become like a star in the sky
You will erase all kindness from the face of the earth
My father will seek vengeance from you
When he sees that dust is my pillow
From these famous arrogant ones
Someone will also take news to Rostam
That Sohrab is killed and thrown down in disgrace
He wanted to make you a supplicant
When Rostam heard this, his head spun
The world became dark before his eyes
He asked after he regained consciousness
He said to him with wailing and crying
What sign do you now have of Rostam
Whose name is less than the arrogant ones
He said to him, if you are Rostam
You killed me senselessly out of bad temper
I was your guide in every way
Your affection did not move one bit from its place
When the sound of the war drum rose from my door
My mother came with her two cheeks full of blood (tears)
Her soul was wounded by my departure
She tied a bead on my arm
She said to me, this is a memento from your father
Keep it and see when it will be useful
Now it has become useful when it has become useless
The son has become disgraced before his father's eyes
Also, my mother, with a bright soul
Sent a champion with me
So that he would show my father to me
And start conversation in every gathering
When that famous champion was killed
My day also turned against me
Now open the straps of my armor
Look at my naked, bright body
When he opened the mail and saw that bead
He tore all his garments
He kept saying, O you killed by my hand
Brave and praised in every gathering
He shed blood and tore his hair
His head full of dust and his face full of tears
Sohrab said to him, this is worse
One should not weep with tears of the eyes
What is the use of this self-killing now?
It happened thus, and this was meant to be
When the shining sun turned from the dome (sky)
Tahmtan (Rostam) did not come to the army from the plain
Twenty cautious men came from the army
To see what the matter was on the battlefield
Two horses were standing in that plain
Rostam, covered in dust, was somewhere else
Because they did not see the strong-bodied one on the saddle
The warriors did not see him on that field of vengeance
Their suspicion was that he had been killed
The heads of all the famous ones became confused
They rushed to King Kavus with the news
That the royal throne had become empty of Rostam
A cry arose from the entire army
The world suddenly began to seethe
Kavus ordered that trumpets and drums
Be blown, and the commander of Tus came
After that, King Kavus said to him
Rush from here to the battlefield
Hurry to see what Sohrab's situation is
For one must weep for the city of Iran
If Rostam, the warrior, has been killed
Who from Iran will dare to go before him?
One must strike many blows
One should not remain on this battlefield
When chaos arose from the gathering
Thus Sohrab said to the strong-bodied one (Rostam)
Now that my day has passed
All the affairs of the Turks have changed
Direct all your kindness that the king
Does not send the army towards war with the Turks
For they, seeking battle for my sake
Have turned their faces towards the border of Iran
I had given promise for many days
I had made much hope from every side
They should not see hardship on the way
Do not look at them except with kindness
Rostam, like a hero, sat on Rakhsh
His face full of blood and his lips full of cold wind
He came before the army with a cry
His heart full of pain and turmoil from his own deed
When the Iranians saw his face
They all placed their faces on the ground
They began to praise the Creator
That he had returned alive from the battle
When they saw his head on the ground in that manner
His clothes torn and his body wounded
They began to ask what had happened
Your condition is like this because of whom?
He told the astonishing thing that he himself had done
He had grieved the one most dear to himself
They all began to cry with him
The earth full of cries and the air full of turmoil
Thus he said to the nobles that I
Today I have neither a heart nor a body, it seems
None of you seek war with the Turks
The evil that I have done today is enough
When the champion returned from that place
He came to his wounded son, with a wounded soul
The nobles went together with him
Like Tus, like Gudarz, and like Gostaham
The entire army, for the sake of that honored one
All opened their tongues from restraint
That God will remedy this matter
Perhaps He will make this matter easy for you
Rostam took a dagger in his hand
To cut off his own humble head from his body
The nobles clung to him
They shed tears like blood from their eyelashes
Gudarz said to him, what is the use now
That you bring smoke (grief) upon the face of the world
If you inflict a hundred harms upon yourself
What ease will come to that honored one?
If time remains for him in the world
He will remain, you also remain with him without suffering
And if this young man is to depart from this world
Look at the world, who is immortal?
We are all prey before death
One head under a crown and one head under a helmet
