Section 2: Then the speaker said to Kay Kavus
After that, a speaker said to Kavus,
That he has a daughter hidden away.
Whose stature is more beautiful than a cypress tree,
She has a crown of black musk on her head (dark hair).
Tall in stature and with lasso-like tresses,
Her tongue like a dagger, her lips like sugar.
She is a decorated paradise full of paintings,
Like the shining sun in a joyful spring.
It is not fitting for her to be other than the king's spouse,
How good it would be for the king to have a moon-like spouse.
Kavus's heart stirred within him,
He gave this answer: This is my opinion.
The king chose from among the group,
A wise and learned man.
Of high value, a hero, and of great intellect,
He commanded him to go to Hamavaran.
He said, "Refresh his opinion for me",
Adorn his mind with sweet words.
Tell him that our alliance in the world,
Is sought by experienced great ones.
That the bright sun is from my crown,
The earth is the base of my ivory throne.
Whoever seeks refuge in my shadow,
Their position will not diminish because of it.
Now I seek an alliance with you,
I am washing the face of peace.
Behind your veil, there is a daughter,
I have heard that she is worthy of me.
That she is of pure lineage and pure body,
Praised in every city and every assembly.
When you find a son-in-law like Pour-e Qobad (Kavus),
Know that the sun itself has given you a gift.
The wise and clear-minded man went,
To the presence of the leader of Hamavaran.
He made his tongue eloquent and his heart warm,
He adorned his lips with gentle speech.
He conveyed abundant greetings from Kavus,
And after that, he spoke what was of the message.
When the king of Hamavaran heard from him,
His heart became full of pain and his head heavy (with worry).
He kept saying, "However much he is a king,",
A world ruler, victorious, and commanding,
I have this one daughter in the world,
Who is dearer than my sweet life.
If I treat the envoy coldly and contemptuously,
I will not have the foundation and means for war.
It is better that I also overlook this pain,
And conceal it and let the anger sleep in my heart.
He said this to the eloquent man,
That this desire has no head nor root (is unreasonable).
He seeks two precious things from me,
That we do not consider them to be anything less than three (very valuable).
My support was from wealth,
My heart was adorned with my child.
After this, no life will remain for me,
Even if the king of Iran takes it.
I will now entrust whatever he wants to him,
I will not turn my head from his opinion and command.
He became sorrowful and summoned Sudabeh,
He spoke words about Kavus to her.
He said to her, "From a high and honored leader,",
Who is independent of greatness and goodness,
An eloquent envoy has come,
With a letter like Zend and Avesta in hand.
He wants from me that without my consent,
He takes away my heart, sleep, and peace.
What do you say now, what is your desire?
What is your considered opinion on this matter?
Sudabeh said to him, 'There is no other solution for this,'
'There is no better consoler today than him.'
Someone who is the ruler of the world,
Wants land from the great ones.
Why are you sad about an alliance with him?
No one counts happiness as sorrow.
The leader of Hamavaran realized,
That this did not seem burdensome to Sudabeh.
He summoned the king's envoy,
And seated him above those nobles.
They made an agreement according to their customs,
In the way that their religion was at that time.
In one week, the leader of Hamavaran,
Was arranging that matter with the nobles.
Then he brought the sorrowful king,
Three hundred and forty attendants in howdahs.
A thousand mules, horses, and a thousand camels,
They loaded with silk and dinars.
Howdahs adorned for the new moon,
With treasures behind and in front.
An army arrayed like paradise,
You would say that tulips were planted on the face of the earth.
When she came to King Kavus,
The heart's ease, with beauty, glory, and splendor.
Two laughing rubies, two languid narcissi (eyes),
The pillars of her two eyebrows like silver pens.
Kavus looked and was astonished,
He invoked the name of God upon Sudabeh.
He gathered an assembly of wise men,
Of wise, old chief priests.
He deemed Sudabeh worthy of being his spouse,
They made a covenant according to their customs and religion.
