Section 2: Thus spoke the Mobed that one day Tus
Thus spoke the Mobad: One day, Tus,
At the time when the rooster's crow arose,
Himself, Giev, Godarz, and some horsemen,
Went joyfully from the king's gate.
To hunt onagers in the Daghvi plain,
With falcons and cheetahs seeking prey.
They captured and brought down many,
And prepared provisions for forty days.
At that place, the Turks were near,
Their land was darkened by tents.
A thicket appeared in the distance,
Near the border of the Turanian horsemen.
Giev rode ahead with Tus,
With a few brave attendants behind.
Both horsemen went to that thicket,
And circled around that meadow.
In the thicket, they found a beautiful face,
Both hastened towards her with smiling lips.
There was no one like her in the world,
There was no fault to find in her beauty.
Giev said to her, O enchanting moon,
How did you find your way to this thicket?
She answered thus My father,
Struck me last night, and I left home and hearth.
He came drunk from the feast plain in the dark night,
And as soon as he saw me approaching from afar,
He drew a gleaming dagger,
And intended to cut my head from my body.
The hero asked her about her lineage,
And recounted her ancestry one by one.
She said to him, "I am related to Garsivaz,
My lineage extends to King Afrasiab."
He said to her, "How did you come on foot,
Coming without a mount or guide?"
She answered thus: "My horse remained behind,
Due to weakness, it left me on the ground."
I possessed immense gold and jewels,
I wore a golden crown on my head."
They seized those adornments from me,
And struck me with a sword's flat (or perhaps a blow from the scabbard)."
When my father regains consciousness, undoubtedly,
He will send a rider swiftly after me."
My mother will come hurrying,
She will not want me to leave this land."
The hearts of the heroes softened towards her,
But the mind of Tus-e Nowzar became relentless (or shameless)."
King Nowzar's descendant (Tus) said, "I have found (her),"
Therefore, I hastened so quickly."
Giev said to him, "O commander of the king's army,
You would not be equal to me without an army."
Just as Tus-e Nowzar boasted thus,
Where he arrived here before my horse."
Giev said to him Do not speak these words of self-praise,
For I hastened ahead in pursuit of game."
Do not speak boastfully because of an attendant,
A chivalrous man does not become quarrelsome."
Their conversation reached a heated point,
That this moon-like woman's head should be cut off."
When that dispute between them became prolonged,
A noble mediator stepped forward."
That they should take this matter to the king of Iran,
So that he could issue a command for both of them."
Neither of them deviated from his words,
And they set their course towards the king of Iran."
When Kavus saw the maiden's face,
He smiled and bit his lip."
The king said thus to both commanders:
That the hardship of the journey for you is now shortened."
Let us spend the day with this tale,
Where the warriors capture the sun (or are as radiant as the sun).
Whether it is a deer or a charming gazelle,
Such a hunt is worthy of a great lord.
Khosrow said to her, 'What is your lineage?',
For your face is like the face of a fairy.
She said to him, 'From my mother's side, I am of royal lineage (Khatun),
From my father's side, I am descended from Fereydun.'
My ancestor is the commander Garsivaz,
His tent is the center of that border (or his encampment is the center there).
He said to her, 'This face, hair, and lineage,
You were about to give all three to the wind (lose them).'
I will perhaps make you worthy of a golden chamber (or adorn you with gold),
I should make you the head (chief/leader) of the moon-faced ones.
She answered thus: 'I saw you,
And I chose you from among the arrogant/powerful ones.'
The king sent the idol (beautiful woman) into the women's quarters (or private chamber),
He ordered her to sit on the throne (or a place of honor).
They adorned her with yellow brocade,
With ruby, turquoise, and lapis lazuli.
And whatever other divine adornments were necessary,
A single red ruby was flawless (or unmatched).
