Section 3: When he reached near the city of Samangan

بخش ۳: چو نزدیک شهر سمنگان رسید

When he reached near the city of Samangan,

News of him reached the king and the nobles.

چو نزدیک شهر سمنگان رسید

خبر زو بشاه و بزرگان رسید

That the hero, the crown-bestower, had come on foot,

Rakhsh had run away from him in the hunting ground.

که آمد پیاده‌ گو تاج‌بخش

به نخچیرگه زو رمیدست رخش

The nobles and the king went to receive him,

Anyone who wore a crown on their head.

پذیره شدندش بزرگان و شاه

کسی کاو بسر بر نهادی کلاه

The king of Samangan said to him, “What has happened,

That anyone dares to test battle with you?”

بدو گفت شاه سمنگان چه بود

که یارست با تو نبرد آزمود

“In this city of ours, we are your well-wishers,

We stand at your command and on your path.”

درین شهر ما نیکخواه توایم

ستاده بفرمان و راه توایم

“Body and possessions are under your command,

The heads of the respected ones and their lives are yours.”

تن و خواسته زیر فرمان تست

سر ارجمندان و جان آن تست

When Rostam looked at his words,

He saw his suspicion of evil as unfounded.

چو رستم به گفتار او بنگرید

ز بدها گمانیش کوتاه دید

He said to him, “My Rakhsh in this meadow,

Went far from me without a bridle or reins.”

بدو گفت رخشم بدین مرغزار

ز من دور شد بی‌لگام و فسار

“Now, from here to Samangan, there are tracks,

And from there, where there are streams and reeds.”

کنون تا سمنگان نشان پی است

وز آنجا کجا جویبار و نی است

“If you search for him, I will be grateful,

I will be aware of your kindness in return.”

ترا باشد ار بازجویی سپاس

بباشم بپاداش نیکی شناس

“If it happens that he remains hidden from me,

Many heads of leaders will have to be cut off.”

گر ایدون که ماند ز من ناپدید

سران را بسی سر بباید برید

The king said to him, “O worthy man,

No one would dare to do this to you.”

بدو گفت شاه ای سزاوار مرد

نیارد کسی با تو این کار کرد

Be my guest and do not be harsh,

All the talk will be according to your desire.

تو مهمان من باش و تندی مکن

به کام تو گردد سراسر سخن

Let us gladden our hearts with wine this one night,

And keep our hearts free from worry.

یک امشب به می شاد داریم دل

وز اندیشه آزاد داریم دل

The trace of fortunate Rakhsh will not remain hidden,

Such a renowned steed of the world.

نماند پی رخش فرخ نهان

چنان بارهٔ نامدار جهان

Tahmtan became happy with his words,

His soul became free from worry.

تهمتن به گفتار او شاد شد

روانش ز اندیشه آزاد شد

He deemed it appropriate to go to his house,

His guest became joyful from the good news.

سزا دید رفتن سوی خان او

شد از مژده دلشاد مهمان او

The commander gave him a place in the palace,

He stood before him on his feet.

سپهبد بدو داد در کاخ جای

همی بود در پیش او بر به پای

He called the important people from the city and the army,

He seated them with him in a fitting manner for rejoicing.

ز شهر و ز لشکر مهانرا بخواند

سزاوار با او به شادی نشاند

He brought wine pourers and musical instruments,

Dark-eyed and rosy-cheeked beauties adorned (the gathering).

گسارندهٔ باده آورد ساز

سیه چشم و گلرخ بتان طراز

They sat together with the musicians,

So that Tahmtan would not be sad.

نشستند با رودسازان به هم

بدان تا تهمتن نباشد دژم

When he became intoxicated and the time for sleep came for him,

He hurried to leave the gathering.

چو شد مست و هنگام خواب آمدش

همی از نشستن شتاب آمدش

A suitable place for rest and sleep for him,

He prepared and placed musk and rosewater.

سزاوار او جای آرام و خواب

بیاراست و بنهاد مشک و گلاب
