Section 4: A vigilant man seeking the way
A vigilant man seeking a solution,
Sent (a message) to King Kavus.
(A messenger) went to the leader of Hamavaran,
A renowned man from Kandavaran went.
He wrote a letter with threats and disputes,
Full of maces, swords, and battles.
That you set an ambush for the king of Iran,
And brought evil upon the alliance.
It is not manly to seek a solution by war,
And not acting according to the custom of a brave leopard (warrior).
That in war, he never sets an ambush,
Even if his heart is full of hatred.
If King Kavus is released,
You will escape from the claws and tail of the dragon.
Otherwise, prepare for war against me,
And bear the weight of my army on your neck.
The messenger went to Hamavaran,
And delivered him the message of all the leaders.
When he heard the message and read the letter,
He was astonished by his own actions.
When he finished reading the letter, his head became dizzy,
The world became dark before his eyes.
He gave this answer: 'Kay Kavus,'
Will no longer entrust his affairs to Hamun.'
Whenever you come to Barbaristan,
You will see nothing but swords and heavy maces.
Imprisonment and your prison is prepared,
If your opinion has desired this wish.
I will come to war against you with an army,
In this way, we will establish the custom and path.
When the elephant-bodied (Rostam) heard the answer,
The brave warriors of the army gathered.
He came to the sea route for war,
Because the land route was with delay.
With ships and boats, a large army,
Went to the border of Hamavaran.
They set their faces towards plundering and killing,
The face of the country became streams of blood.
The news of this reached the king of Hamavaran,
That Rostam had placed a saddle on Rakhsh.
It was necessary for his time to come for war,
There was no time for stillness and delay.
When he went out of his city with the army,
The bright day became a black night.
They arranged the army on the left and right,
And sought renowned warriors for battle.
The elephant-bodied (Rostam) said, 'I am the warrior,'
'I am the one who lingers in the battlefield.'
He raised the heavy mace to his shoulder,
He spurred Rakhsh and a roar arose.
When the army saw his chest and mane,
And the mace and club in his grasp,
You would say that their hearts left their bodies,
The assembly scattered in terror of him.
The king himself with the renowned rebellious ones,
When they saw each and every sign of Rostam,
Fled to Hamavaran,
From before the mighty Rostam and his large army.
When the leader sat down with his advisors,
He requested two young men from the assembly.
So that he could send them immediately,
To Egypt and to Barbar like a blowing wind.
A letter in each of their hands,
Written with heartache and tears of blood.
That from this kingdom it is not far,
Good and bad, war and feast were together.
If you are united with me,
I will not fear Rostam even a little in war.
Otherwise, if that kingdom falls,
The hand of evil is long in every direction.
When the letter reached them,
That Rostam had brought his army to this plain.
Everyone arose with hearts full of fear,
They prepared an army from the country.
They set their course towards Hamavaran,
The land became mountains from end to end.
The army stretched in lines from mountain to mountain,
The trace of an ant became invisible on the ground.
When Rostam saw that near the king,
He secretly sent a man on the way.
That they had arrayed the king of three countries,
And had risen up in this manner.
If I stir up war from this place,
They will not know the head from the foot in this vengeance.
It should not be that evil reaches you from this vengeance,
For evil deeds come from evil people.
The throne of Barbar is of no use to me,
If evil befalls the king's body.
The messenger heard and came running,
He secretly went to Kay Kavus.
He recounted all of Tahamtan's (Rostam's) message,
When Kavus heard, he was astonished.
He gave this reply: 'Do not worry about this,'
The earth has not been spread out for my sake alone.
It has been thus as long as the revolving sky has been,
That with sweetness there is poison, and with war there is love.
And also, the Sustainer is my helper,
His greatness and love are my fortress.
You give the reins to the shining Rakhsh,
Adorn his ears with the tips of spears.
Let one of them remain alive in the world,
Let it be openly, not secretly.
The messenger quickly brought the reply,
It became like smoke for Rostam, son of Zal.
When Tahamtan (Rostam) heard his words,
He prepared himself and set his face towards war.
