Section 5: Then, the army arose from both sides

Then the army rose from both sides, in might

On the second day, warriors set for the fight

The Iranians raised their ranks with pride

As was the custom of the warriors, prepared for the tide

When Afrasiab saw the army advancing near

He struck the iron drum, and raised his troops in fear

The dust rose from the horsemen’s tread

As if the sun had vanished, all light was dead

The roar of battle echoed from both sides

The desert and mountains were hidden by the tides

The warriors clashed in fierce array

Like rivers of blood, they fought in dismay

Wherever Kaweh led the charge ahead

Blood poured down from the dust, dark as dread

Where stood the mighty Afrasiab’s might

The battlefield ran with blood, like rivers in sight

In the end, Nozar, from the heart of the host

Approached the warrior Kaweh, at the battle’s most

They hurled their spears against each other’s might

The spears raised high, in the clash of the fight

So that the spears did not twist like a snake

This is how kings fought, a battle at stake

Thus, the battle continued until the dark of night

The hand of Pishang's son grew weary in the fight

The Iranian forces grew weary, spent and drained

And from the battle, more warriors were pained

They turned their faces in despair and pain

They abandoned the battlefield, with nothing to gain

Nozar’s heart was filled with sorrow and ache

For his crown, worn by fate, was a burden to take

When the sound of the trumpet rose from the plain

He commanded that Tūs approach, to explain

Tūs and Gustaham went to him in haste

Their lips were full of wind, hearts full of waste

He said, 'What is this pain that fills my heart?'

He spoke for a while, then wept, torn apart

He recalled his father’s counsel, full of grace

His lips full of sorrow, heart full of disgrace

Where did it say that from Turk and China’s land

An army would come to Iran’s soil to stand

From them, your heart will grow full of pain

Many will come to harm your army again

From the king's words, now the signs appear

The necks of tyrants shall rise that day in fear

No one reads the letters of the famed and known

For many armies, none will drive away the Turk’s throne

You must go toward Persia, as is your way

To bring the tents, and there you will stay

From there, to draw towards the mountain of Zawa

And there, on Mount Alborz, your group will sow

From here, the armies of the Sassanids will rise

And from this, your own army will disguise

Your deeds will break hearts, make them grieve

And even this fatigue will make them leave

From the seed of Fereydun, perhaps one or two

Will take life from this countless crew

I do not know if there is any other sight

Let us strive tonight, with all our might

Night and day, you have wise men at hand

Seek out the wise to guide this land

If news from this army brings harm or grief

The royal line’s future shall turn to brief

You should not let your hearts be full of need

For such hardship comes from the heavens indeed

Time will bring one to battle, the brave will fight

Another will be crowned, with joy in sight

The dead and the living will become as one

In time, life will return, what’s undone

He gave him advice as was fitting, wise

Then the king’s hand drew out with surprise

He took the two sons and stood them side by side

Tears fell from the king's eyes, unable to hide
