Section 7: Garsivaz brought those treasures

Garsivaz brought that wealth

That the face of the earth was adorned by it

He rushed to the bank of the Jihun River

He chose a messenger from the warriors

So that he would bring news to the king

That Garsivaz had come with that glory

By boat, in one day, he crossed the water

He came towards Balkh, his heart full of haste

The messenger came to the king's court

They said, "Garsivaz has come on the way"

Siavash called the elephant-bodied one

And spoke of this story in various ways

When Garsivaz came to the king's court

He ordered that the way be opened

Siavash saw him and stood up

He smiled and asked for much forgiveness

Garsivaz kissed the ground from afar

His face was full of shame and his heart full of fear

Siavash seated him under the throne

He questioned him sternly about Afrasiab

When Garsivaz sat down from his new place

He saw that head and the new king's crown

He said thus to Rostam: "Afrasiab

When he received news of you, in haste

Sent a memento to the king

He sent it with me now on the way

He ordered that the curtain be raised

They placed it before Siavash's eyes

From the city gate to the court

There was money and horses and slaves and hats

No one knew the measure of how much

Of dinars and of the high crown and throne

All the slaves with hats and belts

The attendants with bracelets and gold collars

It pleased him greatly, he opened his face

He looked and heard his message

Tahmtan said to him, "Be happy for a week

Until we remember the answer

For this request, much thought is needed

And also asking from everyone

When the far-sighted Garsivaz heard this

He kissed the ground and gave blessings

They prepared a house for him

They called for brocades and cooks

Both of them sat awake together

They began to ponder over the more and the less

The elephant-bodied one became suspicious of that matter

That Garsivaz had come in such haste

Scouts galloped out from every side

Just as was necessary, they prepared

Siavash asked Rostam and said

"Bring this secret out from hiding"

That this seeking of peace, for what is it?

Look, what is the antidote to this poison?

From the continuous blood feud near him

See who are the hundred seekers of fame

He will send hostages to us

He will clarify this dark plan of ours

It should not be that he becomes sad from fear of us

He is making a drum under the cloak

When we have done this near the king

A well-wishing messenger is needed

Who will take news of these words to him

Perhaps he will empty his mind of vengeance

Thus Rostam said, "This is the plan

Except for this way, the pact will not come to pass

At dawn, Garsivaz came to the door

Just as he was, with hat and belt

He came before Siavash on the ground

He kissed and gave blessings to the king

Siavash said to him, "Because of your actions

I was full of thought because of your words"

Now the opinion has become completely correct

That we want to cleanse our hearts of vengeance

You will send an answer to Afrasiab

That if your head becomes full of haste because of vengeance

Whoever sees a bad end

It is fitting for him to turn back from bad deeds

A heart that is adorned with wisdom

Becomes a treasure full of wealth

If there is no poison within the sweet drink

Your heart has no share of suffering and harm

When you want to make the pact correct

That we will not seek harm and vengeance

From the warriors that Rostam knows

Whose names he will read to you

Send to me as a gift

Who will be a witness to your words

And also whatever there is from the land of Iran

Which those cities you have in your hand

You will pay and yourself go to Turan

For a time, be free from war and vengeance

There will be nothing but righteousness between us

I will not fasten my belt in the middle for vengeance

I will send a letter to the king

Perhaps he will call back the army

Garsivaz immediately sent

A messenger like a roaring lion

He said to him, "Do not foolishly put your head to sleep

Go quickly to Afrasiab"

Tell him that I hastened quickly

And whatever I sought, I found

He wants hostages from the king

If you want him to turn back from battle

The messenger came and gave him the message

From the king and from the well-reputed Garsivaz

When the king heard the messenger's words

He pondered much and lost his way

He said, "A hundred people from my relatives

If even a few are missing from the assembly

Defeat will enter this court

No one well-wisher will remain for me"

And if I say, 'Do not seek hostages from me'

His whole speech will be considered a lie

It is necessary to send him a gift

If he does not consider it proper without hostages

In the way that Rostam mentioned names

He counted nearly a hundred from his relatives

He sent them to the Shah of Iran

He gave them many robes of honor and finery

He ordered that the drums with trumpets

Beaten and the curtain of the palace lowered

To Khara and Sogd and Samarkand and Chach

Spijab and that country and the ivory throne

He emptied it and went with the army towards Gang

He sought no excuse, deceit, or delay

When Rostam became aware of his departure

His soul was relieved of worry

He came to Siavash like a hero

He recalled all the words he had heard

He said to him, "Since the matters have become right

It is proper if Garsivaz returns"

He ordered that robes of honor be prepared

They requested weapons and hats and belts

A Tazi horse with a golden bridle

When Garsivaz saw that royal robe of honor

You would say he saw the moon on the ground

He went with a tongue full of blessings

You would say he was about to traverse the earth

Siavash sat upon the ivory throne

The ivory crown hanging over his head

He consulted with an eloquent speaker

Someone who could give color and scent to words

From the army, he sought a brave rider

Who could make the king's breath with him

He said to him, "O elephant-bodied one

Who dares to open speech in this matter?"

It is the same Kavus as before

He will neither decrease nor increase in harshness

Unless I go to the Shah of the world

And make clear to him what is hidden

I will traverse the earth if you command

I see nothing but goodness in going

Siavash was pleased with his words

The talk of the messengers passed

The commander sat down and Rostam together

Spoke of all kinds, both more and less

He ordered that the scribe go before him

To write a letter on silk

First, he gave praise to the Just One

From whom he saw strength and glory and skill

The Lord of intellect and time and place

He nurtures wisdom with the soul

No one can pass from his command

Whoever turns away from his covenant

Will see nothing but deficiency from the world

With him is increase and righteousness

May there be blessing from Him upon the king

The world-possessor and chosen of the famous ones

His opinion has reached to every good and bad

Praising wisdom has become his highest pursuit

I arrived in Balkh in the joyous spring

I was all happy from the times

When Afrasiab received news of me

The sun became dark in his eyes

He knew that his task had become difficult

The world became dark, his fortune became mean

His brother came with wealth

Many beautiful women adorned

Seeking protection from the Shah of the world

He would entrust to him the great crown and throne

He would be content with his own boundary in this world

He would know his own level and worth

He would entrust the dark earth from the land of Iran

He would cleanse his heart from vengeance and war pure

He sent a hundred of his relatives to me

He came with this request, O elephant-bodied one

If he forgives him, it is worthy of his kindness

For his face is a witness to his kindness

When the warrior hero wrote the letter

He set his face towards King Kavus

And from that side, the well-wishing Garsivaz

Came to the king of the Turan army

He told the whole story of Siavash

That he has no equal among kings

From the goodness of his appearance and his deeds

From his intellect and heart and shame and speech

Brave and eloquent and hero and rider

You would say he has wisdom by his side

The king laughed and said to him thus

That peace is better than war, O well-wisher

And furthermore, from that dream, I was frightened

From above, I saw a sign of decline

I became full of pain and turned to a remedy

So that I would not see decline and rise

I arranged a remedy with treasure and money

Now it has become as I wanted

And from that side, when Rostam, the lion-man

Came to the Shah of Iran like a hero

He came forward, having drawn his hand

The commander rose from his seat

He asked him and took him in his arms

About his son and the turning of the times

About the warriors and the battle and the work of the army

And about why he returned from the way

First, he opened his tongue about Siavash

He praised him greatly and gave the letter

When the auspicious scribe read the letter to him

The face of the world's king became like pitch

He said thus to Rostam, "Suppose that he

Is young and has not yet reached (maturity) in his face"

There is no one like you in the whole world

In war, lions seek skill from you

Did you not see the evils of Afrasiab

That food and rest and sleep were lost to us?

I had to go, but I delayed

I had a head full of war with him

I did not go because they said, "Do not go from here"

Stay until the new world-possessor prepares

When the divine retribution was willed

The recompense of evils was willed evil

You were desired for that manliness

The heart was adorned in that way

Where he took from every innocent person

So that your heart would turn away from the path

To a hundred wretched and low-born Turks

Whose fathers' names you do not remember

Now, what does he think of hostages?

The same is before his eyes, the same is the dust of the mountain

If you make wisdom your work

I am not tired of war and battle

I will send now to Siavash

A man full of knowledge and full of magic

I will command him to kindle a fire

Bind the heavy-footed Turks, bind them

Put on the fire whatever wealth there is

See that you do not need a single thing

Then send those bound ones to me

That I will sever their heads from their bodies

You, with your army, your head full of war

Go to his court without delay

Open your hand completely

Like a wolf entering before a lamb

When you prepare to learn evil

Your army will plunder and burn

Afrasiab will come to fight you

When rest and sleep become unpleasant for him

Tahmtan said to him, "O king

Do not make your heart sad for this matter"

Listen to my words, O king, first

Then the world is under your command

You said that for the war with Afrasiab

Do not lead the swift army across the water

Wait until he comes to battle

For he himself will bring haste without delay

We were for a while weak in war

He opened the way to peace from the beginning

Whoever seeks cultivation and feast and banquet

It is not good to go to war

And furthermore, breaking a pact by a king

Is not pleasing to a well-wisher

Siavash, when he was victorious in war

Would go like a brave leopard

What did he seek except the throne and crown and signet ring?

Ease of body and the treasure of the land of Iran

He found everything, do not seek war foolishly

Do not wash your bright heart with dark water

If Afrasiab, these words that he said

Intends to hide in breaking the pact

We have not become weary of seeking war

The sword and the lion's claw are in place

Do not desire to break the pact with your son

Do not do what does not befit a crown

Why should words be spoken in secret?

Siavash will not turn away from the pact from the root

And from this deed that the king has pondered

This renowned court will be thrown into turmoil

When Kavus heard this, he became full of anger

He was enraged by that deed and opened his eyes

The Shah of the world said thus to Rostam

That speech will not remain hidden thus

That you have put this in his head

You have dug out such a root of vengeance from his heart

You sought your own ease in this

Not the kindling of the crown and throne and signet ring

You remain here until the commander Tos

Beats the elephant drum for this matter

I will now send a messenger to Balkh

A letter with bitter words

If Siavash turns his head from my pact

And does not come under my command

He will entrust the army to the commander Tos

And he himself and his chosen ones will return on the way

He will see from me whatever is fitting

If such judgment is in his head

Rostam became sad and said aloud

That the sky will bring my head down

If Tos is more warlike than Rostam

Know that Rostam is less than the world

He said this and went out from before him

His eyes full of anger and his face full of wrinkles

At the same time, the king called Tos

He ordered the army to be led on the way

When Tos went out from before Kavus

He ordered the army and trumpets and drums

To prepare and arrange the way

And shorten the way from that battlefield
