Section 8: When Sohrab returned to old Gashasp
When Sohrab returned, the old Gozhdaham,
Brought and seated a wise scribe.
He wrote a letter to the king,
And sent a swift messenger on the way.
First, he praised the Creator,
Then he described the turning of fate.
That a large army has come upon us,
All seeking battle and strife.
A champion is at their head,
Whose age is not more than twelve.
In height, he is taller than a tall cypress,
He is like the shining sun in his appearance.
His chest is like an elephant's and his height is towering,
I have not seen anyone with such hands and mace.
When a Hindustani sword comes into his hand,
The sea and the mountain become narrow for him.
His voice is not like roaring thunder,
His arm is not a cutting sword.
The brave Hojir girded his waist,
And mounted a swift horse.
He went before Sohrab to test his fighting skills,
I have not seen a faster horse than his.
That the warrior blinked his eyelashes,
The smell went from his nose to his brain.
That Sohrab lifted him from the back of the saddle,
He remained astonished at that arm.
He is alive and now in his protection,
His soul is full of worry because of his deed.
I have seen many Turkic riders,
I have not heard of such rein-twisting.
Lest he, in the midst of the two lines,
Captures a warrior.
He brings destruction upon that land,
Where he gallops his horse on the day of vengeance.
No one has seen a rein-holder like him,
You would say it is Sam the rider, and that's all.
Consider his height reaching the sky,
Consider the heads of the revolving fortunes all asleep.
If we ourselves are patient for a while longer,
We will not strive and will not say anything else.
If the king of the land speaks,
He will not send an army and will not set an ambush.
He seizes the fortress and wall because he has strength himself,
No one can take his hand in hand (no one can resist him).
That this wall does not have a ford for him (he can easily overcome it),
The lion will be delayed by his haste.
When the sealed letter arrived at night,
He sought the messenger and opened his lips (spoke).
He said to him, "Go in such a way that tomorrow at dawn,
No one from that army will see you.
He sent the letter on the straight path,
Then after the letter, he stood up.
He put on his gear and pulled his head (covered his head),
He became invisible on that pathless road.
They set their faces towards the city of Iran,
They entrusted that fortress wall to him.
When the sun raised its head from the dark mountain,
The groups of Turks girded their waists.
The commander Sohrab, with spear in hand,
Mounted a strong horse.
He came towards the wall and looked,
He did not see anyone inside the wall.
He came to the fortress, they opened the gate,
They did not see a warrior in the fortress.
They all came before him by his command,
Everyone came seeking a solution for their lives.
When the letter reached the king,
His heart became sad when he heard those words.
He summoned the nobles from the army,
And spoke of this story in various ways.
They sat together with the king of Iran,
All the great men of the army, both high and low.
Like Tus, like Godarz, Keshvad, and Giv,
Like Gurgin, Bahram, and Farhad the new.
The commander read the letter to them,
He asked many questions and remained astonished.
He said thus to the glorious heroes,
That this matter will become prolonged for us.
In this way that Gozhdaham is telling,
He washes his heart from worry.
What shall we do, and what is the remedy for this matter?
Who is this man who has come from Iran?
They all agreed that Giv,
Should go to Zabul to the new leader.
To convey this news to Rostam,
That the throne of the Shahanshah has become fearful.
To call the elephant-bodied one to this battlefield,
That he is the support of the army.
Then he sat and consulted with the scribe,
That a difficult task was unavoidable.
