Section 9: He apologized for the sin

He kept apologizing for his sin,

The army kept searching for him everywhere.

Rostam, Gev, and Tus received news of him,

They went with a large army and drums.

Old Godarz said to Rostam thus:

Since my mother nursed me with milk,

I have seen in the world crowns and thrones,

Kayanian kings and great men with awakened fortune.

Like Kavus, I have not heard in the world,

I have not seen anyone among the lesser and greater ones.

He has no wisdom, neither knowledge nor counsel,

Neither his mind is in place nor his heart.

Then the heroes reached him,

Reproaching, sharp, and quarrelsome.

Godarz, like a healer, said to him:

A place more beautiful than the city is for you.

You give your place to the enemy every time,

You do not tell your vain opinion to anyone.

Three times such suffering and hardship has befallen you,

Your head did not become master from experience.

You led the army to Mazandaran,

See what hardship befell in it.

Again you became a guest of the enemy,

You were an idol, now you have become a Brahmin.

In the world, nothing remained except the pure God,

Who did not read the decree of your sword.

You attacked the whole land in war,

Now you have also attempted the sky.

After you, they will tell such a story,

That a king ascended to the high heavens,

So that he would look at the moon and the sun,

He would count the stars one by one.

Do what wise kings do,

Those who praise and wish good.

Seek nothing but servitude before God,

Do not interfere in good and evil except for Him.

He answered thus: from honesty,

No deficiency comes into the work.

You kept saying justice, but there is no injustice,

My soul is not free from your name.

Kavus remained silent and became worried,

Because of those famous warriors of the day of battle.

He prepared himself and sat in a litter,

Regret and pain were in his hand.

When he came to the throne and high place,

His heart was saddened by that deed.

For forty days, standing before God,

He walked the earth and purified the place.

He kept shedding yellow tears from his eyes,

He kept remembering the Creator of the world.

Out of shame, he did not go out of the palace door,

He kept saying as if his skin was peeling off his hands.

He kept shedding pure blood from his eyes (tears of blood),

He kept asking for forgiveness and guidance.

Out of shame, he lowered himself before the brave ones,

He stopped his pomp and giving audience.

He became regretful and chose pain and suffering,

He forgave and bestowed much treasure.

He kept rubbing his face on the dark earth,

Praying before the pure God.

When some time passed in such weeping,

The Creator of the world forgave him.

He established a new justice in the world,

Which became shining upon the small and great.

The world, you would say, became brocade from justice,

The same king became beautiful on the throne.

From every country, famous elders,

Who had placed tall crowns upon their heads,

Came to the court of King Kavus,

And came back from that rebellion.

Time became as it was at first,

The king washed his face with the water of loyalty.

All the elders became his inferiors,

They became his worshippers and servants.

Wherever a king is just and sufficient,

He has no need for a helper.

With this story, I told what was less heard,

Now the battle of Rostam must be sung.
