Section 9: Then the king ordered a letter

Then the king ordered a letter,

To be written to the renowned Rostam.

First, he praised the Creator,

The world-holder and sustainer of time.

Then he praised the hero,

That you are vigilant of heart and bright of spirit.

You are the heart and support of the warriors of Iran,

You are like the claws and strength of lions.

You are the opener of the bonds of Hamavaran,

The taker of the borders of Mazandaran.

From your mace, the sun becomes weeping,

From your sword, Nahid (Venus) becomes roasted.

The dust behind Rakhsh's hoofs is not indigo (it is so fast that no dust can be seen),

There is no elephant in the world that is your equal.

Your lasso casts bonds upon the lion,

Your spear uproots a mountain from its base.

You are a refuge for Iran from all evil,

From you, the warriors raise their helmets (in respect).

A difficult task has come before us,

From the thought of which my heart has become wounded.

The warriors sat together before me,

When we read that letter of Gozhdaham.

May it be so that in the world, no one but you,

Is a helper in every matter.

The new warriors saw it in such a way,

That the esteemed Giv should come before you.

When you read the letter day and night,

Do not spread the story with open lips (do not delay).

Except with the very wise riders,

You should set out from Zabul and raise a cry (gather your forces).

In this way that Gozhdaham mentioned him,

No one but you should fight him.

Then he said to Giv, "Deliver like smoke (quickly),

You must urge your swift horse.

You must go near Rostam,

Do not stay in Zabul, even if you are wealthy.

If you arrive at night, return by day,

Tell him that the battle has become difficult.

Otherwise, this brave man is superior,

The malevolent one cannot be considered insignificant.

He took the letter from him like water (quickly),

He went and sought no rest or sleep.

When he reached near Zabulistan,

The cry of the outposts reached Dastan (Rostam).

Tahmtan (Rostam) went to receive him with his army,

The great men placed their helmets on their heads.

Giv and the warriors dismounted together,

Everyone who was there, both high and low.

The renowned hero dismounted from his horse,

He asked about Iran and the king.

They went from the road towards Rostam's palace,

They stayed for a while and rested.

He said what he had heard and gave the letter,

He mentioned some words about Sohrab.

When Tahmtan heard and read the letter,

He laughed and remained astonished at that matter.

That a brave rider like Sam, from the great ones,

Has appeared in the world.

This is not surprising from the free men,

Such a thing cannot be remembered from the Turks.

I, from the daughter of the king of Samangan,

Have a son, and he is still a child.

That dear one does not yet know that war,

Must be done at the time of fame and shame.

I sent him much gold and jewels,

To his mother by the hand of someone.

Such an answer came that that esteemed one,

Will not be long before he grows up.

He drinks milk with his milk-smelling lips,

He will undoubtedly soon become quarrelsome.

Let us stay for one day and rest,

Let us put some moisture on our dry lips (rest and refresh).

After that, let us go near the Shah,

Let us show the way to the warriors of Iran.

Perhaps the shining fortune is not awake,

Otherwise, such a task is not difficult.

When the sea rises in waves from its place,

The swift-footed fire has no breath (cannot resist).

When he sees my banner from afar,

His heart will bring mourning at the time of feasting.

He will not come to battle with such swiftness,

It is not necessary to take such a difficult task.

They reached for wine and became drunk,

They started telling stories about the commander.

The next day, early morning, still hungover,

Tahmtan came and prepared the matter.

Because of drunkenness, he refrained that day as well,

He did not remember going on the second day.

On the third morning, he brought wine again,

He did not remember Key Kavus.

On the fourth day, Giv arranged things,

He said thus to the new brave leader.

“That Kavus is quick-tempered and not wise,

This story is not insignificant in his heart.”

“He is worried about this matter and his heart is restless,

Eating, rest, and sleep have become far from him.

If we delay in Zabulistan,

We will again engage in wine, fighting, and war.

“The king of Iran will become angry with us,

And from impure intention, he will become vengeful.”

Rostam said to him, “Do not worry about this,

For no one can fight with us on the earth.”

He ordered that Rakhsh be saddled,

And they put iron shoes on his hooves.

The riders of Zabul heard the sound of the hooves,

They went from their places with helmets and armor.
