Ghazal No. 117: From afar I saw Shams of the Faith
From afar, I saw the Sun of the Faith
The pride of Tabriz and the envy of China
That eye and lamp of the heavens
That reviver of the earth
O you who have become such and even more so
Every soul that has seen one like him
He said, "Whom shall I drag to lamentation?"
I said, "The least of servants"
This was said, and suddenly
He opened his ambush from the unseen
He set fire to the being of the servant
And uprooted pride and malice
Without a heart, the blackness of the tulip from that wine
Made the jasmine intoxicated
In his embrace is the essence of the goal
He shakes his sleeve over us
A king who, when he showed his face to the moon
Placed a saddle on the horse of the heavens
Sit crookedly and speak straight, for there is no
Equal to the king of the true spirit
By God, there is no news of him
Even to the holy and trusted Gabriel
What will he do now that he has brought speech
To that high seventh heaven?
When we opened another eye in him
We will not buy certainty for a barleycorn
Alas, how he turned upside down
That fortune of union with the fur coat
O musician of the love of my Shams al-Din
For your soul, tell this again
Since I cannot reach his hand to kiss it
I strike my forehead on the ground
