Ghazal No. 158: The blending of spirits in times of peace and wars
The mingling of souls in times of peace and wars
Should be with someone whose soul is pure and clear
Since there is change in the soul at the time of war and peace
That is not one soul alone, but rather they have become separate
When the heart desires peace, one is like a bride
For the nuptial chamber of conversation with the enemy-faced groom
Again, when there is a desire towards one side, it is as if he
Has a desire towards the delicate, heart-ravishing groom
Mingling from sights and mingling from words
And mingling from stories and mingling from thoughts
Just as mingling is apparent in bowing
And from shaking hands and embracing and the direction of prayer and praise and supplication
These differences in mingling are from inclination and half-inclination
And from the core of willingness and unwillingness and from fear and modesty
That deliberate bowing and that soft, gentle praise
Are also levels in meanings, chosen in forms
All of this becomes a plaything when you reach someone
Whose spiritual dance carries him to prostration and that throne says, "Welcome!"
That kind lord, the cherisher of servants, Shams al-Din
Who will deliver you from this unfaithful thought
Until when will you be fearful and hopeful with non-existence?
All of this is the effect of his wrath until the time of his pleasure
Existence is truly the soul of him, since existence turned away from him
Inevitably, in non-existence, you build with the restriction of desire
Sometimes with the glorification of desire and sometimes with the glorification of imagination
Sometimes with the glorification of speech and sometimes with the glorification of meeting
Sometimes the imagination is pleasant in jest, like a wet dream
Sometimes the imagination is bad, like an inappropriate dream
And then imaginations are better than this vile people
This is existence, which is less than the imagination of the blind
Then from that side of non-existence, worse than this from a hundred non-existences
These non-existences, according to their levels, are like permanence
Until the auspicious shadow of his lordship comes
No bond of yours will be opened, know this for sure, O heart
