Ghazal No. 17: A call came from the sky for the soul to return

A call came from the heavens to the soul, saying, "Return, peace be upon you!"

The soul said, "O sweet caller, welcome, and may ease be upon you!"

With hearing and obedience, O caller, two hundred souls are sacrificed for you every moment

Call out once more so that I may fly with "Have I not?" (referring to the Quranic verse where God asks souls if He is their Lord)

O rare guest of ours, you have taken away the peace from our souls

Where are you finally calling us? He said, "Beyond soul and place."

I will remove the heavy chains from the feet of these prisoners

I will place a ladder on the sky so that the soul may ascend to the highest realm

You are the increaser of the soul of souls, finally you are from our city

You set your heart on a stranger, how is this a condition of loyalty?

Wandering has been written for you, you have forgotten your home

That old, fat Kabuli has performed a hundred deceits of magic on you

This caravan after caravan is running towards that stage

Why doesn't your head turn back? Why doesn't your heart boil for you?

He does not hear the sound of the camel driver and the bell from before and behind

Oh, many companions and fellow breathers, our ears are sitting there

A creation is sitting at our ears, drunk, happy, and unconscious of us

Shouting in our ears, "Come to the king, O beggar!"
