Ghazal No. 201: The night passed and yet our story did not end
The night passed, and yet our story did not end
Inevitably, the whole story must be told
By God, from the time of Adam to the Day of Resurrection
This length has not become short, nor will it
But it seems like it has now ended
When the Turk says 'ashpu' to the walking man
What is the Turk's 'ashpu' that is near a dwelling
So that it may give you warmth and brilliance and strength
Since the path is for walking, stopping is destruction
How does it make you 'qanq' (sound) that 'come, enter the tent'?
He is a man of generosity whose life is not withheld
But if he seizes you, you will remain in affliction
Do not have bad thoughts about the Turk and do not accuse him
Do not resist like a Hindu, hurry, companions
For there, in the fire, are three horseshoes for you
And there, in your ear, is the heart of your own and your relatives
The longing of the generous ones does not allow that sweet water
To go down your throat, O faithful friend
Even if you sit in honey, they will soon make it bitter for you
And if you become paired with the faithful one, that (faithfulness) will become oppression
Be silent and walk the path, and know this for certain
That the water of estrangement keeps (one) wandering like a millstone
