غزل شماره ۲۱۸: ز بهر غیرت آموخت آدم اسما را
For the sake of jealousy, Adam learned the names
(He) wove together the comprehensive veil of all the parts
ز بهر غیرت آموخت آدم اسما را
ببافت جامع کل پردههای اجزا را
Jealousy was for the sake of the other, and when there was no other
Why did (He) show the duality of that unique One?
برای غیر بود غیرت و چو غیر نبود
چرا نمود دو تا آن یگانه یکتا را
The mouth (of the world) is full of the secret of the silent world
What prevents eloquent speakers from measuring words?
دهان پر است جهان خموش را از راز
چه مانعست فصیحان حرف پیما را
(They) closed the path of the mouth with successive kisses
The sugar-lipped ones of truths, the eloquent mouths
به بوسههای پیاپی ره دهان بستند
شکرلبان حقایق دهان گویا را
Sometimes from the kiss of the beloved, and sometimes from the cup of wine
There is no opportunity for speech, neither for hints nor allusions
گهی ز بوسه یار و گهی ز جام عقار
مجال نیست سخن را نه رمز و ایما را
How pleasantly they break speech with the wound of a kiss
With sedition, they have closed the path to sedition and tumult
به زخم بوسه سخن را چه خوش همیشکنند
به فتنه بسته ره فتنه را و غوغا را
When sedition becomes intoxicated, they suddenly become turbulent
What can restrain the reckless intoxicated one?
چو فتنه مست شود ناگهان برآشوبند
چه چیز بند کند مست بیمحابا را
When the wave becomes low, the mountains and the sea become (one)
Who fears the water that makes the hard rocks afraid?
چو موج پست شود کوهها و بحر شود
که بیم آب کند سنگهای خارا را
When the stone becomes water, and the water becomes stone, then know
The encompassing (power) of the all-powerful, all-seeing King
چو سنگ آب شود آب سنگ پس میدان
احاطت ملک کامکار بینا را
When war becomes peace, and peace becomes war, then see
The craftsmanship of the hand of that wise Creator
چو جنگ صلح شود صلح جنگ پس میبین
صناعت کف آن کردگار دانا را
Cover your face, for covering the face is the work of the good
You have found us subdued, subjugated, and tamed
بپوش روی که روپوش کار خوبانست
زبون و دستخوش و رام یافتی ما را
See what opponent you have fallen upon, you, a lion, with a rabbit
Do not completely close the path of consolation
حریف بین که فتادی تو شیر با خرگوش
مکن مبند به کلی ره مواسا را
Look at my greed, that I am giving you advice, which do not do
Just as a half-mosquito would give advice to a phoenix
طمع نگر که منت پند میدهم که مکن
چنان که پند دهد نیم پشه عنقا را
Just as a pale face fights with bile
Just as hashish would block the path of the sea
چنان که جنگ کند روی زرد با صفرا
چنان که راه ببندد حشیش دریا را
I was a thunderbolt, O beloved, or a fire
You have not left us a dwelling or a home
اکنت صاعقه یا حبیب او نارا
فما ترکت لنا منزلا و لا دارا
I weep with pride, but I am bewildered by intoxication
So I do not understand for myself either pride or shame
بک الفخار ولکن بهیت من سکر
فلست افهم لی مفخرا و لا عارا
When will I repent from sin? My repentance is my sin
When will I be protected when love has become my neighbor?
متی اتوب من الذنب توبتی ذنبی
متی اجار اذا العشق صار لی جارا
My reason says, 'Do not exchange guidance for my cloak'
Or (do not exchange it) for what has been decreed in the destruction of homelands
یقول عقلی لا تبدلن هدی بردی
اما قضیت به فی هلاک اوطارا
