Ghazal No. 235: He saw me and did not ask, why, oh beloved

That beautiful one saw me and did not ask why

Passed by the window of the beloved, so sullenly, why?

What was the reason, what did I do that seemed bad from me?

That this dust has taken his heart, why?

Why did he intend to shed the lover's blood at dawn?

Why did he draw such a sword of Zulfiqar, why?

When I saw that flower of his, whose color had faded

A thousand thorns sprouted from my wretched heart, why?

When he opens his lips to laughter, the heart becomes open

In those lips is always the opening of affairs, why?

When he ties a knot between his eyebrows in anger

My afflicted heart becomes knotted with sorrow, why?

What a connection of the soul with his opening and laughter!

Why do I become weak if I do not see him for a single moment?

The world becomes dark the moment he turns his face away

Neither day remains, nor reason is stable, why?

For a single breath that my beloved's heart was lifted from us

Why did the kindness of the Creator flee from us, why?

Perhaps it is the kindness of God, and we have made a mistake

Otherwise, why has his goodness become boundless?

If pure kindness had manifested itself without form

Why did the prophets become veil-holders, why?
