Ghazal No. 252: The friend vows that tonight it is for you
The beloved vows that tonight you
Will have no sleep, rise above desire
Preserving the mind is for the troubled one
Because my beloved needs wakefulness
Your mind is like the oil of a lamp
The lamp of our body is faithless
If the jug is full of oil, it is of no use
When morning comes, your lamp is extinguished
The invitation of the sun is better than your oil
How many lamps are worth that one call?
His beautiful eye has no sleep at all
It intoxicates the eyes of all creation
All sleep, and it smiles
His beautiful eye at the flaws of eyes
Then 'To whom belongs the kingdom?' rises in the sky
Where are the kings with golden robes?
Where are the commanders, where are the viziers, where are the great ones?
Where are the guardians for the lands of God?
What happened to the people of knowledge and the people of the pen?
You will not find a demon in the palace
Their houses and bodies have become dark and narrow
Because we took away one breath of light
When the dust, whose wind goes away, becomes
It falls on the black earth, destitute
When they leap from the veils of their sleep
They rub again the whiskers of injustice
Ah, how forgetful are this group!
Their knowledge has no permanence at all
The burning of the candle is quickly forgotten
On the heart of the moth, from ignorance and blindness
It comes back with half-burnt wings
It burns again, like an unworthy heart
Make your vow, make your rule, be a ruler
Over night and day and dawn, O God
