Ghazal No. 28: Oh king of our body and soul, make our teeth smile

غزل شماره ۲۸: ای شاه جسم و جان ما خندان‌کن دندان ما

O king of our body and soul, make our teeth smile

Apply kohl to our eyes, O you who are the collyrium for the eye of the soul

ای شاه جسم و جان ما خندان کن دندان ما

سرمه کش چشمان ما ای چشم جان را توتیا

O moon, ashamed of your glory, your love is lawful from our blood

When I saw you, my heart said, 'The decree has come, the decree has come'

ای مه ز اجلالت خجل عشقت ز خون ما بحل

چون دیدمت می‌گفت دل جاء القضا جاء القضا

We are your wandering ball in the curve of your polo stick

Sometimes you call it towards joy, sometimes you drive it towards calamity

ما گوی سرگردان تو اندر خم چوگان تو

گه خوانیش سوی طرب گه رانیش سوی بلا

Sometimes you pull it towards sleep, sometimes you pull it towards means (of livelihood)

Sometimes towards the city of eternity, sometimes towards the plain of annihilation

گه جانب خوابش کشی گه سوی اسبابش کشی

گه جانب شهر بقا گه جانب دشت فنا

Sometimes it gives thanks to that Lord, sometimes it sighs and cries 'woe is me'

Sometimes it serves Layli, sometimes it is drunk and mad with God

گه شکر آن مولی کند گه آه واویلی کند

گه خدمت لیلی کند گه مست و مجنون خدا

You have made the soul manifest, made it mad and enamored

Sometimes a lover of the corner of solitude, sometimes a lover of appearances and hypocrisy

جان را تو پیدا کرده‌ای مجنون و شیدا کرده‌ای

گه عاشق کنج خلا گه عاشق رو و ریا

Sometimes it intends to (wear) a gold crown, sometimes it throws dust upon its head

Sometimes it makes itself a Caesar, sometimes it wears a patched robe like a beggar

گه قصد تاج زر کند گه خاک‌ها بر سر کند

گه خویش را قیصر کند گه دلق پوشد چون گدا

A wondrous tree it is, from which sometimes an apple grows, sometimes a gourd

Sometimes poison grows, sometimes sugar, sometimes pain grows, sometimes medicine

طرفه درخت آمد کز او گه سیب روید گه کدو

گه زهر روید گه شکر گه درد روید گه دوا

A wondrous stream, within which sometimes you run water, sometimes blood

Sometimes ruby-colored wines, sometimes milk, and sometimes healing honey

جویی عجایب کاندرون گه آب رانی گاه خون

گه باده‌های لعل گون گه شیر و گه شهد شفا

Sometimes knowledge is thrust upon the heart, sometimes wisdom is uprooted from the heart

Sometimes it achieves excellences, sometimes calamity sweeps away all

گه علم بر دل برتند گه دانش از دل برکند

گه فضل‌ها حاصل کند گه جمله را روبد بلا

One day it becomes Muhammad-bek, one day it becomes a leopard and a dog

Sometimes it becomes an ill-wisher, sometimes parents and relatives

روزی محمدبک شود روزی پلنگ و سگ شود

گه دشمن بدرگ شود گه والدین و اقربا

Sometimes it becomes a thorn, sometimes a rose, sometimes vinegar, sometimes wine

Sometimes a drummer, sometimes a drum, until it endures the blows of the stick

گه خار گردد گاه گل گه سرکه گردد گاه مل

گاهی دهلزن گه دهل تا می‌خورد زخم عصا

Sometimes a lover of these five and six (senses), sometimes a seeker of sweet souls

Pulling this way, pulling that way, like a camel that has lost its place

گه عاشق این پنج و شش گه طالب جان‌های خوش

این سوش کش آن سوش کش چون اشتری گم کرده جا

Sometimes, like a lowly scorpion, he turns his face towards the pit (of hell) like Qarun (Korah)

Sometimes, like Christ with a new crop, he soars towards the heavens

گاهی چو چه کن پست رو مانند قارون سوی گو

گه چون مسیح و کشت نو بالاروان سوی علا

Until your grace guides him and frees him from hypocrisy and duplicity

Our trickster becomes enamored, single-minded like the morning sun

تا فضل تو راهش دهد وز شید و تلوین وارهد

شیاد ما شیدا شود یک رنگ چون شمس الضحی

Like the fish of his sea, his sea is his dwelling, his sea is his garden and homeland

His sea is his grave and shroud; he knows nothing but the sea as an epidemic

چون ماهیان بحرش سکن بحرش بود باغ و وطن

بحرش بود گور و کفن جز بحر را داند وبا

He becomes free from these colors, he enters the vat of Jesus

He sets his face towards the dye of God, until 'God does what He wills'

زین رنگ‌ها مفرد شود در خنب عیسی دررود

در صبغه الله رو نهد تا یفعل الله ما یشا

He is freed from shamelessness and modesty, from wandering and moving from place to place

Freed from 'go' and freed from 'come', like the stone beneath the millstone

رست از وقاحت وز حیا وز دور وز نقلان جا

رست از برو رست از بیا چون سنگ زیر آسیا

'Indeed, We have opened your door; do not abandon your companions'

'We will join your descendants to you; this is the reward of friendship'

انا فتحنا بابکم لا تهجروا اصحابکم

نلحق بکم اعقابکم هذا مکافات الولا

'Indeed, We have strengthened your side; indeed, We have forgiven your sin'

Because of what you have thanked your Lord for, and gratitude draws contentment

انا شددنا جنبکم انا غفرنا ذنبکم

مما شکرتم ربکم و الشکر جرار الرضا

(Meter of the poem)

The door of expression is closed; say, 'Our silence is more appropriate for us'
