Ghazal No. 323: That breath when you are with yourself, the friend appears as a thorn

غزل شماره ۳۲۳: آن نفسی که باخودی یار چو خار آیدت

That breath when you are with yourself, the beloved comes to you like a thorn

And that breath when you are without yourself, what does the beloved do for you?

آن نفسی که باخودی یار چو خار آیدت

وان نفسی که بیخودی یار چه کار آیدت

That breath when you are with yourself, you yourself are the prey of a gnat

And that breath when you are without yourself, an elephant becomes your prey

آن نفسی که باخودی خود تو شکار پشه‌ای

وان نفسی که بیخودی پیل شکار آیدت

That breath when you are with yourself, you are bound by the cloud of sorrow

And that breath when you are without yourself, the moon comes to your side

آن نفسی که باخودی بسته ابر غصه‌ای

وان نفسی که بیخودی مه به کنار آیدت

That breath when you are with yourself, the beloved withdraws

And that breath when you are without yourself, the wine of the beloved comes to you

آن نفسی که باخودی یار کناره می‌کند

وان نفسی که بیخودی باده یار آیدت

That breath when you are with yourself, you are withered like autumn

And that breath when you are without yourself, even winter comes to you like spring

آن نفسی که باخودی همچو خزان فسرده‌ای

وان نفسی که بیخودی دی چو بهار آیدت

All your restlessness is from the seeking of your own peace

Become a restless seeker, so that peace may come to you

جمله بی‌قراریت از طلب قرار تست

طالب بی‌قرار شو تا که قرار آیدت

All your discomfort is from the seeking of comfort

If you abandon seeking comfort, poison will become palatable to you

جمله ناگوارشت از طلب گوارش است

ترک گوارش ار کنی زهر گوار آیدت

All your lack of desire is from the seeking of your desire

Otherwise, all desires will come to you like scattering gifts

جمله بی‌مرادیت از طلب مراد تست

ور نه همه مرادها همچو نثار آیدت

Become a lover of the beloved's tyranny, not a lover of the beloved's kindness

So that the coquettish beloved becomes a lover of your wretchedness

عاشق جور یار شو عاشق مهر یار نی

تا که نگار نازگر عاشق زار آیدت

When the king of the East, Shams of Din, arrives from Tabriz

By God, you will be ashamed of the moon and the stars

خسرو شرق شمس دین از تبریز چون رسد

از مه و از ستاره‌ها والله عار آیدت
