Ghazal No. 43: I was lazy and inexperienced, but he desired me
I was lazy and worthless, (but) desire brought me in
The parrot of his thought, like sugar, consumed me
The radiance of the eternal sun, the nourisher of soul and world
Cooked and nurtured me in the manner of rose sugar
I said, "O revolving heaven, I am not a man of your injustice"
It said, "Has it found (me) weak? O noble one, (look at) this man of mine!"
O king of the chessboard of heaven, my checkmate is your gain
O king, that throne is yours, this board is mine for backgammon
I have become thirsty and seeking water from you, O sea, so much so that
Even if I drink the surrounding ocean, it would be fitting for me
Your wondrous beauty has made me a stranger in both worlds
Since you are unique, how will you not make me unique from everyone?
I went during autumn towards the vineyards, biting my hands (in regret)
Every yellow leaf of mine became a mourner for your separation
That face of yours, like the day, creates turmoil for lovers
This night-wandering heart of mine makes me famous in the world
Like the straightness of your banner, (I am) dancing from the air
Open my wings, gently, gently, and illuminate me
The cold morning breeze blows for the sake of the sun
This cold breath of mine is for the sake of your sun
When a part is separated from a part, it causes pain in your body
If my part is separated from the whole, how will there be no pain for me?
I am a slave of the one who harms me without fault
Because (he) has a quality from that moon who has caused me pain
For everyone, a desire is a share of fate and destiny
His love brought (me) destiny as a gift and a present
Do not ride the horse of speech too much, do not create dust on the path of the soul
Even though that dust itself became the kohl for my soul
