Ghazal No. 71: If it were not for the love of Shamsuddin in our day and night
If the love of Shams al-Din had not been with us day and night,
Where would freedom have been for us from the snare and its cause?
The idol of lust would have destroyed us with its heat,
If the heat and fever of his love had not been for us.
The caresses of his love, the tenderness of his affection,
Freed and gave us freedom from our suffering and toil.
Blessed is this alchemy of truth that is from the affection of his soul,
That all our suffering and toil became the very essence of joy and comfort.
The divine favors, for the sake of serving that king (Shams),
Nourished and gave us existence from the very essence of courtesy.
The spring of the beauty of that leader (Shams) suddenly showed us
Our anemones and basil and wondrous flowers.
Blessed is the fortune, blessed is the eminence, blessed is the luck, and blessed is the star,
That makes us, the desired of all souls, seek from the (very) soul.
He (Shams) chose (his) lips in a state of intoxication (and said), "Do not reveal intoxication,"
When the cup of the soul became brimming with those wines of our lips.
What a wondrous fortune that suddenly revealed (itself), a thousand thanks!
From the beloved, delicate of attributes, good and wondrous for us.
In that gathering where, through his (Shams's) grace, the pitchers were turned (filled),
Our hearts and souls became precious and lighthearted from joy.
Towards the land of Tabriz, what a spring of the water of life it is!
That draws our hearts to that side with love, like a magnet.
