Ghazal No. 73: The idol of the tavern came to take us home
The idol of the tavern came to take us home.
Showed the new spring to refresh us.
Opened his sign, fastened his waist.
Filled his bow to waylay us.
Throws in a hundred points, sets up a hundred traps and deceits.
Plays a hundred wondrous backgammon games to happily devour us.
Go, become the shadow of the cypress, run before and behind him.
Even if, like a newly planted tree, he uproots us.
If his heart is rock, do not flee and do not go, O friend.
For in the beginning he will draw us and in the end he will draw us.
When the beloved coquettishly hides within our hearts,
A hundred coquetries reach us from all the sultans.
He came back, he came back, that long life came.
That goodness and coquetry came to brand us.
That soul and world came, and that hidden treasure came.
And that pride of kings came to cover our pain.
He is coming and coming, the one who is needed.
And from his coming, it is possible that our hearts will leap.
Shams al-Haq Tabrizi came into the house of Aries.
To pleasantly ripen us on the tree of nature.
