Ghazal No. 96: Do not taint your lips with every kiss and every morsel
Do not defile your lips with every kiss and every sweetness
So that it may become drunk and sugar-eating from the lips of the beloved
So that the scent of other lips may not come from your lips
So that love may become pure and clear and unique
That lip that the anus of a donkey was its kissing place
How can it find that sugar-kissing lip of the Messiah?
Know that anything recent is but darkness compared to the ancient light
At that time, there will be a spectacle on the dung heap full of recent things
When the recent fades away in the heart of the garden
It is freed from recentness and becomes a flavor enhancer
As long as you are recent, what do you know of the pleasure of holiness?
Go from recentness towards the Blessed and Exalted One
From that hand of the Messiah came the medicine of the world
Who kept his hand away from every cup of dregs
From the bounty of Pharaoh, what did Moses wash his hands and lips?
The sea of generosity gave him the shining hand
If you want to escape from every raw thing of the stomach and lips
Be full of pearls and bitter-faced like the sea
Beware, close your eyes, for that is a jealous eye
Beware, keep your stomach empty, for the sweetmeat is prepared
A satiated dog will not catch any prey
For it is from the fire of hunger that steps and paces are in demand
Where is the pure hand and lip that will take the pure cup?
Where is the nimble Sufi who will come towards the sweetmeat?
Show from these words images of truths
O Thou who dividest the coffee and the cup upon us
