Ghazal 17: The breast burned from the heart's fire in grief for the beloved
The breast burned from heart's fire in grief for the beloved
It was such a fire in this house that the dwelling burned
My body melted from separation from the beloved
My soul burned from the fire of love for the beloved's face
See the heart's burning, that from my tears' fire, the candle's heart
Last night burned for me from love like a moth
It's no stranger but a friend who burns for me
When I went beyond myself, even the stranger's heart burned
The tavern's water carried away my ascetic cloak
The tavern's fire burned my house of reason
Like a wine cup my heart broke from the repentance I made
Like a tulip my liver burned without wine and tavern
Make less fuss and return, for my eye's people
Removed the cloak from head and burned it in gratitude
Leave the tales, Hafez, and drink wine for a moment
For we didn't sleep all night and the candle burned with stories
