Ghazal 47: To the tavern's lane, every wayfarer who knew the path
To the tavern's street, every wayfarer who knew the path
Knew knocking on another door was a wasted thought
Time gave not the crown of rendi except to one
Who knew the world's glory in this cap
Whoever found a path to the tavern's threshold
Knew the monastery's secrets from the wine cup's grace
Whoever read the two worlds' secret from the cup's script
Knew Jam's cup's mysteries from the path's dust pattern
Don't seek from us beyond the worship of the mad
For our creed's sheikh knew rationality as sin
My heart sought no mercy from the cupbearer's narcissus eyes
Because it knew that Turk's way was black-hearted
From the tyranny of the fortune's star at dawn my eye
Wept so that Venus saw and the moon knew
The tale of Hafez and the wine cup that he speaks secretly
What place for the magistrate and the king's sheriff to know
A high-ranked king for whom the nine vaults of heaven
Knew as but a sample of his court's arched vault
