Ghazal No. 168: My soul melted, hoping to heal the heart, but it did not happen
The soul melted, hoping the heart's work would be complete, but it was not
We burned in this futile desire, but it was not fulfilled
One night, with pleading, he said, 'I will become the leader of your gathering'
I willingly became his humble servant, but it was not enough
He sent a message, saying, 'I wish to sit with the rogues'
He went with roguery and endured pain, but his name was not made
It is right if the heart's dove trembles in the snare
For who has seen, in their path, the twists and turns of the snare and not been caught?
With the desire to kiss those ruby lips in drunkenness
How much blood fell in my heart like a cup, but it was not enough
Do not set foot in the alley of love without reason
For I showed myself a hundred efforts, but it was not enough
Alas, in seeking the treasure of the desired letter
I became ruined, a world of sorrow, but it was not enough
Alas and pain, in the search for the treasure of presence
I became a beggar at the doors of the generous, but it was not enough
Hafez stirred a thousand tricks from the depths of thought
In that desire to tame that beauty, but it was not enough
