Ghazal No. 170: The recluse ascetic went to the tavern last night
The ascetic, who sat in solitude, last night went to the tavern
He broke his vow and became one with the cup
The Sufi of the gathering, who yesterday broke cups and goblets
With one sip of wine, became wise and prudent
The witness of his youth came to him in a dream
Again, in old age, he became a lover and mad
A young wine-seller passed by, a thief of religion and heart
In pursuit of that familiar one, he became estranged from all
The fire of the rose's cheek burned the nightingale's harvest
The smiling face of the candle became the sun of the moth
The weeping of evening and dawn, thank God, was not in vain
Our drop of rain became a single pearl
The narcissus-eyed cupbearer recited the verse of enchantment
Our circle of prayers became a gathering of tales
Hafez's abode is now the court of the king
The heart went to the beloved, the soul became one with the soulmate
