Ghazal No. 178: Whoever became close to the beloved remained in their sanctuary
Whoever became intimate with the heart, remained in the sanctuary of the beloved
And whoever did not know this work, remained in denial
If my heart has emerged from the veil, do not fault it
Thank God it did not remain hidden in the veil of illusion
The Sufis redeemed all their goods from the pledge of wine
Our patched cloak remained in the house of the wine-seller
The inspector became a sheikh and forgot his own immorality
Our tale remained in every marketplace
Every ruby wine we took from that crystal hand
Became tears of regret and remained in our gem-filled eyes
Except my heart which went from eternity to eternity in love
We have never heard of anyone remaining forever in action
He became ill wanting to have eyes like yours, narcissus
He did not achieve your manner and remained ill
I have not heard anything sweeter than the voice of love
A memento that remained in this revolving dome
I had a patched cloak that covered a hundred faults
The cloak became a pawn for wine and the minstrel, and the thread remained
The beauty of your face astonished the figure of China
That its story remained everywhere on the walls and doors
In the observatory of her curls, Hafez's heart one day
Returned and remained forever captive
